WHAT IS THEORY & CASE?

Theory: a way to understand/resolve and interpret something


in the real world

Case: a situation or story that shows one specific event or


experience.
THEORY
Theory allows writers to interpret reality.
Theories have different aspects and are usually developed by an expert.
 Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Psychological Theory - Human needs)
 Bloom’s taxonomy (Educational Theory)
 Authentic Leadership (Leadership Theory)
 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Political Theory)
 The Convention on the Rights of the Child (Political Theory)

CASE
oA case is a situation or story (real or fiction) that shows one specific event or person’s
experience.
oMovies, books, and documentaries can be used as a case.
oUsing the theory, you can analyze the case from different aspects.
oUsing the case, you can analyze the theory based on specific events or characters.

INTRODUCTION

1. Include an introductory sentence (Introduce the general idea of children’s rights)


2. Topic sentence (paraphrase the researched information about the theory - when it
was made/purpose and function + add an in-text citation)
3. Thesis statement (Explain what you will integrate/ You can choose to organize your
paper by theory or case.
THESIS EXAMPLE
Option 1: Theory organization
The THEORY is a useful tool for explaining injustice revealed in the video “…”

Option 2: Case organization

•If you want to organize by case, use time order from the story in your roadmap.
•Choose to analyze the conflict at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
SUMMARY PARAGRAPH
1. INTRODUCE researched information about the history/case. Provide
background information on the CASE for readers to understand the case.
2. SUMMARIZE the case using time transition words and reporting verbs
(begins, continues, asserts, explains, illustrates, suggests, concludes,
compares, contrasts, adds to, expands)
3. Transition sentence (use a synonym of THESIS KW).

•Do not use “Direct quotations.” Paraphrase with in-text citations.


BODY PARAGRAPHS (X3)
I. Assertion: include your thesis keyword & paragraph keyword.
II. Explanation: Explain the paragraph keyword.
III. Evidence 1: Give a “quotation” with details from the OPTION YOU CHOSE.
IV. Discussion 1: Explain the article meaning
V. Evidence 2: Give a “quotation” with details from the OPTION YOU CHOSE.
VI. Integrated Discussion: Intellectual response (your opinions)
VII. Connection sentence: Summarize what you have discussed in the paragraph using the key words.
CONCLUSION
•Re-state thesis statement & keywords
• Provide a simple summary of your essay.
• Do not make any recommendations or add new pieces.
• You do not need any research or quotations.

DEDUCTIVE PATTERN
Deductive patterns appear throughout the introduction and the
background paragraph (General to Specific)

 THEORY is more general (abstract) than the CASE (concrete).


 Start with a general introduction to the topic (human rights theory) in
the introduction.
 Provide more specific information about the case in the background
paragraph.

 Your writing (intro/background/body paragraphs) will follow a deductive


writing pattern.
1. Read the assignment instruction on Moodle.
2. Finish watching the case again. Choose three different
scenes to analyze and take note on quotes from the case.
3. Study the history of residential schools in Canada and the
review the theory.
