Approaches To Study I.R
Approaches To Study I.R
R
There are several distinct approaches to
the study of IR, these include: the traditional approach,
1. the scientific approach,
2. the behavioural and
3. post-behaviouralist approaches, and
4. the systems approach.
TRADITIONAL APPROACH
In view of the
complex variables influencing behaviour of states, the
traditionalists focus on the observed behaviour
of governments.
It is associated with the rise of the behavioral sciences, modeled after the natural
sciences.
This means that behavioralism claims it can explain political behavior from an
unbiased, neutral point of view.
Behavioralism seeks to examine the behavior, actions, and acts of individuals – rather
than the characteristics of institutions such as legislatures, executives, and judiciaries –
and groups in different social settings and explain this behavior as it relates to the
political system.
Post-Behaviouralist Approach
In the 1980s, an attempt was made to
combine normative and empirical approaches to study IR
.
This approach can be used to test the validity of
the idealists' hypothesis to see if democratic or
authoritarian states are more likely to
be engaged in internal conflicts
Post-behavioralism (or post-behaviouralism) also known
as neo-behavioralism (or neo-behaviouralism) was a reaction
against the dominance of behavioralist methods in the study of
politics.
