Projects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2®)

• A structured project
management method
• Emphasizes dividing projects into
manageable and controllable stages.

• It is adopted in many countries
worldwide, including the UK, Western
European countries, and Australia.
• Training is available in many

languages.
Projects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2®)

Seven Principles
• PRINCE2 is based on seven principles and these cannot be tailored.
1. Continued Business Justification
2. Learn From Experience
3. Defined Roles and Responsibilities
4. Manage by Stages
5. Manage by Exception
6. Focus on Products
7. Tailor to Suit Project Environment:
• Not every aspect of PRINCE2 will be applicable to every project, thus every process has a note
on scalability.
• This provides guidance to the project manager (and others involved in the project) as to how much of
the process to apply.
• The positive aspect of this is that PRINCE2 can be tailored to the needs of a particular project.
• The negative aspect is that many of the essential elements of PRINCE2 can be omitted sometimes
resulting in a PINO project – PRINCE in Name Only

Waterfall Model
• This methodology is ideally suited for websites, database software or network
software.

Agile Model
• A way to manage a project by breaking it up
into several phases.
• It involves constant collaboration with
stakeholders and continuous improvement
at every stage.
• Once the work begins, teams cycle through
a process of planning, executing, and
evaluating.
• Continuous collaboration is vital, both with
team members and project stakeholders.

Rapid Application Model (RAD)

• An adaptive software development
model based on prototyping and
quick feedback with less emphasis
on specific planning.
• Prioritizes development and building
a prototype, rather than planning.
• Developers can quickly make
multiple iterations and updates to
the software without starting from
scratch.

A3 – Project management structures
• User requirements, including:

• a ‘functional requirement’ of the system, including the
definition of inputs, the process and the outputs, e.g. a
calculation, data manipulation process, what it is required to
accomplish
• a ‘non-functional requirement’ to satisfy in the system,
including quality attributes of the system, e.g. performance or
maintainability of a system.

A3 – Project management structures
• Project job roles and responsibilities:

• Project manager : developing project plans; managing the stakeholders; managing
communication across the team; managing individuals, risks, schedules, budgets,
conflicts and delivery
• Systems architect : design and implementation of hardware and infrastructure, providing
definitions of hardware and how it meets the requirements of the system
• Electronics engineer : including designing electronic components, circuits and systems,
providing interfaces for software implementation and development of firmware
• Product owner : role as key stakeholder; identifying priority requirements, work items,
release dates; has a vision for the product to be built
• Lead developer : responsibility for underlying architecture, serving as mediatory
between management and the development team body, acting as a mentor to more
junior developers o developer, including writing software code, applying developer
written unit test

Main Task
1- A landscape gardening company has commissioned a software development company to develop a
new piece of software that can be used by customers to view a model of what their new garden might
look like. A project manager has been appointed to oversee the project. Identify and explain four stages
of project management that will be coordinated by the project manager.
 I can compare process of different stages.

2- Compare and contrast the steps involved in planning stage and monitoring and control stage.
 I can evaluate the importance of iteration.

3- Evaluate, why it is necessary to iterate between the planning, execution, and monitoring and control
stages of project management.
Challenge: Project management involves decision making. Evaluate the decision making
process required for each stage of the cycle.
