The Language of Visual Signs
 A sign is a concrete representation of an idea.
 Visual signs appeal to the eye through
pictures, colours, shapes and designs.
 For example: Road signs, which indicate a
cross –road, a railway station, a school, a bend
or a U turn are quite helpful to pedestrians and
motorists. Traffic lights , lights outside the
Operation Theatre and ambulance make use of
colourful signs.
The Language of Visual Signs
 Veneration of great personalities through statues .
Cartoons and caricatures have richer communicative
potential than that of verbal language. Hence the
saying, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’
 Visual signs in business Communication
 Tables, line and surface charts, maps, drawings,
diagrams,pictograms, photographs and animated
visuals are forms of visual business communication.
Coreldraw, powerpoint, Photoshop, Painter, Excel,
Lotus 1-2-3 and others.
Advantages
 Effective as channels of warning against danger.
 They are quick to convey messages.
 Useful in time-management
 Helpful in regulating work in an organization.
 Convenient devices to make complex
presentations attractive & interesting.
 More effective than writing in several contexts.
 Cartoons help clarify with humour.
Disadvantages
 Visuals being concrete, oversimplify concepts.
 They require complex skills to produce.
 Visuals do not offer feedback.
