PRODUCT DESIGN AND

DEVELOPMENT
Chapter 1 : Introduction
PRODUCT

06/06/2024
PRODUCT- any device or system that is designed and
produced for use by a customer

CUSTOMER-Person who ultimately buys the product

Another person in your company who may use the device you
design

 Think broadly about who the customer is (who does the

product affect)
 Chief objective of product design - Satisfying the customer(s)
2
TODAY’S BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
 Innovation

06/06/2024
 Be the first in the market
 Shortened product life cycle & shortened product development
cycle
 concurrent engineering/operation
 Frequent changes & agile operations
 mass customization
 Smaller lots and just-in-time production
 lean manufacturing/thinking
 Core business and supply network
 Global economy and corporate intelligence
 Internet and wireless integration

3
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

06/06/2024
Product development is the set of activities beginning with
the perception of a market opportunity and ending in the
production, sale and delivery of a product.

4
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

5
WHY STUDY THE DESIGN PROCESS?

06/06/2024
 Continuous need for new, cost effective, high quality
products
 Today’s products are complex and require a team of
people with different backgrounds to take an idea from
concept to market
 ~85% of problems with new products not working as
intended, taking too long to bring to market, or costing
too much are the result of a poor design process

6
MEASUREMENT OF THE DESIGN
PROCESS

06/06/2024
 Product quality
 How good is the product resulting from development ?
 Does it satisfy customer needs ?
 Is it robust and reliable ?
 Product quality is reflected in market share and the price
 Product cost
 What is the manufacturing cost ?
 It includes capital equipment and tooling
 Development time
 How long did the PD effort take ?
 Development cost
 How much spent in PD effort ?
7
 Development capabilities
 Did the team/firm acquire any experience for future projects ?
3 MEASURES OF DESIGN

06/06/2024
Cost Time

Quality

Duration may vary from 1 yr to 10yrs or greater

 Marketing
 Design
 Mechanical
 Electrical
 Software
 Industrial

 Manufacturing
 Operations
 Warehouse
 Supply Chain

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TEAM –
EXTENDED TEAM

06/06/2024
 Legal, sales, finance professionals
 Consulting firms

 Government agencies

 Universities

 Environmental groups

 Professional regulatory groups (such as the ASME)

10
CHALLENGES

06/06/2024
 Trade-offs (maximize the success of product)
 Dynamics in the environment

 Tremendous amount of design details

 Time pressure  Creation

 Economics
 Satisfaction of societal and
individual needs
 Team diversity
 Team spirit

11
STRUCTURED METHODOLOGIES

06/06/2024
A step by step approach and provide templates for the key
information systems used by the team.

Structured methodologies are valid for three reasons:

 They make the decision-making process explicit
 They provide “checklists” to ensure that important issues
are not forgotten
 They are readily documented in a structured way

12
ORGANIZATIONAL REALITIES

06/06/2024
leading to dysfunctional product development team

 Lack of empowerment of the team

 Functional allegiances transcending project goals

That is, allegiance to functional department vs. project success

 Inadequate resources
 Lack of cross-functional representation on the project
team

13
06/06/2024
 Question?
 Is product development an art or an science?
 Homework assignment
 Do exercise #2 on page 10
 Due date: next week
