Valves
Module Objectives

By the end of this module, YOU will be able to:

 Identify all the types of valves used in operation

Schlumberger-Private
 Understand the operating safety aspects of these valves
Valves

High Pressure Medium Pressure Low Pressure

> 5000 psi ~ 1500 psi ~ 180 psi
• Gate Valve • Ball Valve • Butterfly Valve

Types of Valves

4
Gate Valve

• Used for shut off, (on/off function)

• High pressure (5, 10, 15, 20Kpsi)
• SSV, CM, Steam-exchanger, Sand-trap

Gate Valve

Seal in closed position

Gate Valve

Seal in open position

Schlumberger-Private
Needle Valve

•Used for shut off, (on/off) + Flow control

(bleed off part of flow)
•High pressure (5, 10, 15, 20Kpsi)

Schlumberger-Private
•Instrumentation on CM, Steam-exchanger,
Sand-trap
•Autoclave Engineers (10, 15, 20K)
•Sealing method: metal/metal
(~sizes= ¼”, ½”)
Ball and Plug Valves
• Used for shut off, (on/off)
• ¼ turn
• Medium pressure (~1500 psi)

Schlumberger-Private
• Separator, burners, pumps, etc.
• Sealing method:
-PTFE (Teflon) seal ring or seat
Standard sizes= 1/2” to 4”
Ball and Plug Valves

Cross Section of a Balon valve

Schlumberger-Private
•Sealing = black
teflon ring seal
Ball and Plug Valves

Gachot
•Medium pressure

Schlumberger-Private
•Sampling / bleed-off points
•Sealing= white teflon seal ring
•Standard sizes = ¼”, ½”, ¾”, 1”
Plug Valve (cylindrical)
top hexagonal nut O-ring
Texseal
• Sealing= black teflon seat
stem
Seats (black teflon)

Plug
(cylindrical)
Butterfly Valve

Weco
•Used for shut off, (on/off) +

Schlumberger-Private
Flow control
•Low pressure
•Tanks
•Sealing= rubber seal
•Standard sizes= 1”, 2” 3”
Globe Valve
•Used for control of flow and shut off
•Low pressure
•Rig Water / air lines

Schlumberger-Private
•Sealing= metal/metal
•Standard sizes= 1”, 2” 3”
Automatic Control Valve

Fisher
•Used for flow control + throttle
action

Schlumberger-Private
•Medium pressure
•Separator, Surge tank
•Sealing (not 100%)= metal/metal
•Standard sizes= 1”, 2”, 3”,4”
Check Valve
Flow through valve
•To allow flow in one direction only
•High/Medium/Low pressure
•Separator inlet, pump outlet

Schlumberger-Private
•Sealing= metal/metal
Flow ceases or fails below back
•Standard sizes= 1”, 2”, 3”,4”
pressure
Relief Valve
Farris
•Spring loaded and set to open at a
given pressure to protect systems from
over pressure

Schlumberger-Private
•High/Medium/Low pressure
•Separator, flowlines, Steam-exchanger,
Surge-tank
•Sealing= metal/metal
•Standard sizes= 1”, 2”, 3”,4”
Relief Valve

Anderson Greewood
•Piloted safety relief valves

Schlumberger-Private
•High/Medium/Low pressure
•New Separator and Surge-tank
•Sealing= metal/metal
•Standard sizes= 3”,4”, 6”

Safety Concerns

19
Safety Concerns
Gate/Globe/Ball Valve
• DO NOT restrict the flow at the valve to avoid damage on the sealing compound
• The valve should be fully open/close

Schlumberger-Private
Gate/Globe Valve
• Count the number of turns to open / close a valve to know if it’s plugged or is not seating correctly.
• After fully open/close turn back by ¼ to avoid over tightening the valve, which may damage the disk and seat,
leading to seizure or leakage.

Needle Valve
• Opened enough (1 or 2 turns):
• to permit flow and allow the instrument to register correctly.
• to allow a quick closure of the valve
