How do metals react with water?

• Groups 1 and 2 react quickly with water. These metals would not be practical to use in
the building industry as they would be destroyed in the rain.
METAL + WATER  METAL HYDROXIDE + HYDROGEN
Sodium + water  sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
Write the word equation for:
Calcium + water  Calcium hydroxide + hydrogen
Magnesium + water  Magnesium hydroxide + hydrogen
Lithium + water  Lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
Extension: Symbol equations. Compound = M+1 / M+2 and OH-

• Observations?
• Observations: Effervescence (bubbles in a liquid) and hydrogen gas
being produced

Hydrogen gas is invisible

Hydrogen gas has no smell

So how can we prove it is there?

We can test the gas to confirm it is hydrogen gas

The test for hydrogen is the ‘squeaky pop test’

Using a lit splint and a boiling tube of gas, if the gas burns
with a squeaky pop, the gas is Hydrogen.

Magnesium and water demo

• How can you tell a reaction is taking place?
• How would you describe this reaction? Vigorous or slow?
• What metal might react faster with water?
• How do we confirm the gas given off is hydrogen?
• Write the word equation for this reaction
• Stretch: Can you write the symbol equation?

Keywords: metal hydroxides, hydrogen, diatomic, squeaky pop

Worksheet answers:
• 1a) Calcium b) Hydrogen c) Copper
• 2a) Magnesium – melts into a ball and fizzes a lot
• Potassium – bursts into flames
• Lithium- reacts very slowly producing a few bubbles
• Sodium – floats on the surface producing bubbles of gas
• 2b) 1: Potassium, 2: Magnesium, 3: Sodium, 4: Lithium
• 3) lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
• 4) True: Hydrogen is a gas at room temperature. Hydrogen burns with
a ‘squeaky pop’ when lit
