David Carson:
1955
Carson was born on September 8, 1955, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
[1] Graduating from Rolling Hills High School,[2] he continued his education
and graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts
in Sociology.[2] Carson surfed professionally before finding employment with
magazine Self and Musician.[1] He then moved on to work at Transworld
Skateboarding for four years, and was then hired as an art director at Beach
Culture in 1989.[1] Three years later Carson was hired by Ray Gun (magazine),
where he stayed for three years. He later created his own design firm (David
Carson Design).[1] Carson received the AIGA medal in 2014.
ARTWORK
Ray Gun magazine covers by David Carson, 1994. Carson's
compositions were chaotic, the complete opposite of magazine
layouts established at the time. Reflecting type, cropping
photos, placing type on shifted axis, placing the barcode in the
centre, distorting photos with texture, he tried everything
possible using the Macintosh. And despite this being pretty
normal for today's designs, it's still impressive.

ARTWORK
Todd Oldham’s new monograph on Charley Harper (1922-2007),
mentioned here last February, is a winner in every sense of the word.
From the lavish packaging, beautiful print quality and exquisite collection
of artwork, the book is everything a Charley Harper fan could want.
Michael Bierut at Design Observer has some incisive thoughts about
Harper in this piece entitled “Flat, Simple and Funny: The World of
Charley Harper. About the new book, Bierut makes this observation: “…
it’s beautifully produced, a clear labor of love for designer-author
Oldham. But as a tribute, it struck me as somewhat ill-fitting, just too
over-the-top and lavish for a humble, softspoken designer who claimed to
be unable to draw a straight line without a ruler or a circle without a
compass.”
