Structural Elements of Narrative structure

The exposition in narrative writing introduces the setting, main characters, and context,
Exposition establishing the background for the plot and upcoming conflict
The rising action in narrative writing escalates conflict through an inciting incident, increasing
Conflict complications, and critical turning points, driving the plot toward the climax
The climax is the story's peak of tension and conflict where the protagonist's decisive actions
Climax resolve the central conflict and steer the narrative towards its resolution.
The resolution concludes the narrative by resolving conflicts, revealing character outcomes, and
Resolution providing closure to the story
You will be given five story prompts. You
must choose one prompt.

Create the 4 sections of the story and


explain them to the class in a short
presentation. Your presentation should be 2-
3 slides only. 5 minutes of speaking time is
allowed and will be timed.
Story Prompts
The Mysterious Old Map: While cleaning out the attic, you stumble upon an old, dusty
map. It seems to lead to a hidden treasure, but the path is filled with riddles and
challenges. Describe your journey and the people you meet along the way. How do you
overcome the obstacles, and what do you find at the end of the map?

A Day in the Life of an Unusual Pet: Imagine you have a pet that isn't a typical animal—
perhaps it's a dragon, a miniature giant, or a talking plant. Write a story from the
perspective of this pet, describing a day in its life. How does it interact with you and the
world around it? What adventures or troubles does it get into?

The Time-Traveling Classroom: During a particularly boring history lesson, your


classroom suddenly travels back in time to a significant historical event. Describe the
experience: Where and when do you end up? How do you and your classmates react?
What challenges do you face, and how do you get back to the present day?
The Secret Beneath the School: Your school has always seemed ordinary, but one day,
you discover a hidden door that leads to an underground world. Describe what you
find there: Are there hidden creatures, ancient artifacts, or secret societies? How do
you explore this new world, and what secrets do you uncover?

The Swap: You wake up one morning to find that you've swapped lives with someone
else for a day. It could be a celebrity, a historical figure, or even a classmate. Describe
your day living as this other person. What new experiences do you have, and what
challenges do you face? How do you cope with the differences, and what do you learn
from this experience?
Your story should have a 100-120 word paragraph explaining/analyzing each
element of the story.

Exposition: Includes setting, context, characters (100-120 words)


Conflict: The problem/problems that arise in the story (100-120 words)
Climax: The highest point of tension in the story (100-120 words)
Resolution: The answers to the conflicts in the story (100-120 words)

Remember that you do not have to write out an


entire story. You ONLY have to have to give a brief
paragraph explaining the different elements of
the story.

You should verbally elaborate and present the


paragraphs you have written as this is a Speaking
Exam. The focus for this Exam will be your
speaking skills.
