Introduction
 ‘EDDY CURRENT’ is define as oscillating electrical current induced in a
conductive material by an alternating magnetic field, due to electromagnetic
induction.
 In the realm of non-destructive testing (NDT), Eddy Current Testing (ECT) serves
a critical purpose: identifying flaws and imperfections within conductive
materials without causing any damage to the material itself.
 This enables inspectors to assess the integrity of a material without compromising
its functionality or future use.
Components of an Eddy
Current Testing Machine
An eddy current testing machine typically consists of the following components:
 Excitation Coil: This coil generates the alternating magnetic field that
induces eddy currents in the test material.

(fig. excitation coil) (fig. excitation coil)

•Probe: The probe houses the excitation coil and
directs the magnetic field towards the test area.
Probes come in various shapes and sizes depending
on the application.

(fig. eddy current prob)

•Display Unit and Control Panel: Display
unit displays the electrical impedance
measured by the probe. Changes in impedance
can indicate the presence of flaws in the
material.
•And Control panel allows the operator to
adjust parameters like the frequency of the AC
current and the gain of the instrument.

Principles of Eddy Current
Testing
 Electric current are generated in a conductive material by an induced
alternating magnetic field.
 Interruption in flow of eddy currents caused by imperfections, dimensional
changes, or changes in the material’s conductivity and permeability
properties, can be detected with proper equipment
 An alternating current of frequency 1 kHz -2 MHz is made to flow in a coil
which in turn produces an alternating magnetic field around it.
PROPERTIES OF EDDY
CURRENT
 Eddy current density decreases with the depth
exponentially. This phenomenon is known as
the skin effect.
 Eddy current are closed loops of induced current
circulating in planes perpendicular to magnetic
flux.
 Eddy current travel parallel to the coil’s winding
and flow is in limited area of inducing magnetic
field

Projects I Worked On
1. SCHAFFLER EDDY CURRENT
2. MUTIGAUGING STATION OF ROCKER ARM
SCHAFFLER EDDY
CURRENT
 This is an Eddy Current for hard & soft material shorting
technology.
 This controller based non-contact type system has
mechanical structure, conveyor assembly, servo motors,
GUC unit, Elotest IS3 controller etc.
 The Hardness detection by non-contact type probe & results
are shown on Elotest IS3 Screen.
Things I worked on:
 Helped to reduce the cycle time of component
 Identifying error in working of machine
 Understand the pneumatic diagram of machine (fig. schaffler eddy current machine)
MUTIGAUGING STATION OF
ROCKER ARM
 This is mutligauging machine for rocker arm.
 It is use to check whether the rocker arm is
accurate according to required dimensions.
 And do itching of QR code on it.
 There are sensors to measure the dimensions.

Things I worked on :
 Toke reading of dimensions.
 Understand the diagram of rocker arm.
