The Army Profession

ARMY PROFESSION:
A trusted vocation of Soldiers and Army civilians whose
collective expertise is the ethical design, generation, support,
and application of landpower; serving under civilian authority;
and entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and
interests of the American people.

Key Attributes of the


Profession of Arms
 Requires expert knowledge manifested as unique skills in
their individual and Army units
 Exists through a relationship of trust with its own members
and the American people
 Requires continuous development manifested in leadership
by professionals at all ranks
 Requires unwavering, deeply held values when
adapted/internalized, is manifested in the character of
individual professionals
 Requires vital service to the American society manifested in
the duty of the individual professional

U.S. Army Professionals


 Preserve Trust and confidence of American people and fellow Army
professionals by sustaining essential characteristics of the Profession
 Advance expert knowledge from Military Experience, skills, and abilities
in unified land operations, develop and certify every Army Professional in
competence, character, and commitment
 Strengthen Honorable Service and demonstrate strength of character
by upholding the Army Values and Army Ethic
 Create and sustain professional organizational climate, increase
cohesion, and foster pride in the Profession through Esprit de Corps
 Through Stewardship, ensure present and future development and
effectiveness of the Profession’s people and resources

Roles of Army Professionals


 Honorable Servants of the Nation – Professionals of Character
 Army professionals serve honorably—according to the Army ethic—under
civilian authority while obeying the laws of the Nation and all legal orders;
they reject and report illegal, unethical, or immoral orders or actions

 Army Experts – Competent Professionals


 Army professionals perform their duty, leading and following with discipline,
striving for excellence, putting the needs of others above their own, and
accomplishing the mission as a team

 Stewards of the Army Profession – Committed Professionals


 Army professionals embrace and uphold the Army Values and standards of
the profession, always accountable to each other and the American people
for their decisions and actions

Practical Exercise
Job vs. Profession
 Divide into equal groups and select a group leader
for each group
 Using the white board or a piece of paper create a
“t-chart” with two columns:
 Column A – Make a list of jobs (i.e. secretary)
 Column B – Make a list of professions (i.e.
teacher)
 After three minutes, be prepared to share and
discuss your group’s answers
