Geography of The Aztecs
Aztecs
Location: The Aztec Empire, was located
in what is now central Mexico.
It covered an area that included present-
day Mexico City and its surrounding
regions.
Capital City: The capital of the Aztec Empire
was Tenochtitlan, which was founded in
1325.
It was situated on an island in Lake Texcoco
and was connected to the mainland by a series
of causeways and canals.
• The empire's territory was diverse. It
included highland areas, lowland regions,
and fertile valleys. The surrounding
mountains and lakes influenced the
empire's agriculture and trade.
• The Aztec Empire was surrounded by
natural barriers, including mountains and
lakes, which provided some protection
from invaders.
• Lake Texcoco, in particular, served as a
natural defence for their capital,
Tenochtitlan.
• Despite their central location, the Aztecs established extensive
trade routes that extended to other Mesoamerican civilizations.
They traded goods like obsidian, feathers, textiles, and
precious metals.
• Expansion: The Aztec Empire expanded its territory through
conquest, eventually controlling a large part of central
Mexico. Their expansionist efforts were driven by a desire for
tribute and captives for religious and sacrificial purposes.
