Human Eye
• The eye is the organ of vision. Eyes have evolved many
times as vision offers many advantages to both predators
and prey.
• Human eyes have a 3 layered structure made of the sclera,
choroid and retina.
• Sclera is a layer of connective tissue that protects the eye
and makes the white of the eye and cornea.
• Choroid is the thin middle layer of the eye. Absorbs excess
light to prevent blurring of vision. Forms iris.
• Retina contains the light sensitive photoreceptor cells.

Human Eye
• Cornea is the transparent front of the eye. Part of sclera.
Bends light into eye through pupil onto lens. No blood
vessels and very sensitive to pain.
• Iris controls size of pupil so amount of light entering eye.
Coloured brown, blue or green. In albinos it is pink.
• Pupil is a circular hole in iris that allows light into eye.
• Lens is a transparent tissue that focuses light onto back of
eye. Cataract happens if the lens becomes cloudy.

Human Eye
• Retina is light sensitive part of eye. Contains photoreceptor
cells (rods and cones) that send nerve signals to brain when
stimulated by light.
• 125 million rods give vision in dim light.
• 6-7 million cones work in bright light and give colour
vision. Three types of cones red, blue, green.
• Macula is eye’s centre of focus. It contains fovea and gives
most accurate vision.
• Optic nerve carries visual information to the brain from the
retina. It exits the eye at the optic disc (or blind spot).

Human Eye
• The ciliary body connects the choroid to the lens. Contains
ciliary muscle that controls shape of lens.
• Suspensory ligaments connect the ciliary muscle to lens.
• Aqueous humor is clear watery liquid filling area between
cornea and lens. Glaucoma happens if duct draining it is
blocked.
• Vitreous humor is transparent gel that fills eye beyond
lens.
