INTRODUCTION
 Fresh water pollution with various contaminants has been a serious environmental problem over
the years. The awareness of lead toxicity in paint dates back to decades and Painter’s colic or
painter’s palsy was the term used to describe Lead poisoning. Goya and van Gogh are paint artists
that were known to have being diagnosed with lead poisoning. Nigeria had higher levels of lead
which was above recommended limit with levels as high as 14,599 ppm. The researcher observed
that the high levels of lead was determined by the colour of the paint sold (Doherty et al., 2019).

 Clarias gariepinus, a crucial food source in Nigeria, is resilient and adaptable to environmental
shifts. It offers insights into aquatic ecosystem health. Histopathology reveals organ structural
changes on cellular and subcellular levels, detecting pollution effects sooner than external signs
(Nwani et al., 2015).

LITERATURE REVIEW
• Owolabi and Adewoye, (2017) investigated the effects of paint wastewater on the histology
of gill and liver of Clarias gariepinus. Juvenile C. gariepinus were exposed to acute (400, 500,
600 and 700 ml) and chronic (100, 150, 200 and 250 ml) concentrations of paint wastewater
for 96 hours and 28 days respectively. this study showed that paint wastewater effluent
caused severe pathological damages to the branchial and hepatic tissues of C. gariepinus
and this may threaten the survival of the fish. Hence, there is the need for proper treatment
of paint wastewater before being discharged into water bodies.
 Orimoloye, (2019) explained that paints effluent affects water quality and hence poses
potential health risks to aquatic organisms associated with the contaminated water. He
exposed Clarias gariepinus to varying concentrations of the toxicant, ranging from 1.25mls/l
to 6.25mls/l, in separate tanks The analysis revealed the presence of heavy metals,
specifically lead (0.34±0.01ppm) and zinc (1.20±0.01 ppm), in the paint effluent.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Aim of Study
 The aim of the study is to assess the immediate impacts of paint effluent exposure
on African mud catfish.
Objectives
 Evaluate the immediate harm caused to African mud catfish and the aquatic
ecosystem due to paint effluent exposure.
 Analyze the toxic substances present in the paint waste and their concentrations
that lead to acute effects.
 Monitor and record changes in the health, behaviour, and survival of African mud
catfish after exposure to paint effluent.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

The swift impact of paint effluent on African mud catfish triggers rapid

health, behaviour, and survival shifts, underscoring risks of releasing such

waste into aquatic homes. This research stems from the urgency to grasp

paint waste hazards on ecosystems and beings. Laden with harmful toxins,

paint waste disrupts fish physiology, causing stress, organ damage, and

death.

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
 50 active fingerlings (4-5 weeks old) of Clarias gariepinus will be purchased and
transported in a plastic container from a fish farm at Olorungbohunmi Street, Ile-
Oluji, Ondo State. The container will contain pond water obtained from the farm.
 The fish will be transported into plastic holding tanks in the Environmental
Biology Laboratory in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.
 The test compounds, paint effluent will be collected from Waplux Paint Industry,
Ondo City, Ondo State.
 Water quality parameters like temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity
and total dissolved solid will be monitored as contained in standard methods in
APHA (1995).

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY (CONT’D)
ACUTE TOXICITY ASSAY
 Prepare by designing controlled exposure experiments using African mud catfish.
 Acclimatize them in Laboratory for 7 days in the plastic holding tanks containing
dechlorinated water. They will be fed with Coppens feed while the water will be changed
every other day. Feeding will be stopped 24 hours prior to and throughout the 96 hours
experimental period.
 Set up exposure tanks with varied paint effluent concentrations and controls.
 Monitor behaviour, health, and mortality of the fishes.
 Apply statistical analysis to results and ensure ethical standards.
 Compile findings into a comprehensive report to understand acute paint effluent effects
on the catfish.

EXPECTED RESULT
Mortality Rate: This project anticipates a higher mortality rate among
Clarias gariepinus exposed to paint effluent compared to the control
group, indicating its toxicity.
Behavioural Changes: Expected behavioral shifts in the fish may include
altered swimming, reduced feeding, and increased stress responses,
revealing sublethal effects.
Physiological Parameters: Water quality degradation, altered pH,
dissolved oxygen, and temperature changes are expected due to paint
effluent exposure.
Toxicity Threshold: Determining the concentration where adverse effects
become significant is a project goal.
Data on Effluent Composition: Identifying chemical components helps
understand pollution sources.
