Reducing Probable Risks
By

Why Safety?
To Protect Human Life & Health
Why Health?
No time to think about
it. I just need money
A small careless thing can change your life!
You are just trash when you die!
Types of Safety
1. Road Safety

1. Road Safety
2. Food Safety

2.
3. Physical and Mental Safety
4. Cyber Security or Cyber Safety
5. Community Safety
6. Occupational
Safety and Health
(OSH)
What is Hazard and Risk?
HIRARC?
Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control
Physical Hazards

- Moving parts, protruding parts, sharp objects, slippery floor,

electrical components, radiation, noise, vibration, heat, fire,……

? ?
Biological Hazards

- Bacteria, Virus (e.g., COVID), Fungus,………….

? ?
Chemical Hazards

- Hazardous chemicals

? ?
Ergonomic Hazards

- Over natural ability of human being, physical factors that can result
in musculoskeletal injuries

? ?
Psycho-social Hazards

- an adverse effect on an employee’s mental health or wellbeing

? ?
Source of Hazards

Machinery - installation, layout and design of equipment

Material - substances such as chemicals in the workplace
Man - the way people carry out job, attitude
Media - quality of air in the workplace, amount and placement of
lightning, noise, vibration
Causes of Accidents

1. Unsafe Acts
2. Unsafe Conditions
3. Unsafe Practices
Hazard Identification

Activity Classifications Hazard Classifications

R - Regular Activity P -Physical
NR - Non-Regular Activity B -Biological
E -Emergency Activity C -Chemical
E -Ergonomic
Ps -Psychosocial
Hazard Identification
Activities I (HIRARC)

1. Go to the work place

2. Find 5 activities and define the classification
3. Define the hazards
4. Classify the hazards
5. Group presentation
Risk Assessment Is there any risk to
get closed?

Hazards
Risk Level

Probability Severity
A - Unlikely (zero to low), e.g. once a year 1 – No harmful, no material lost, no illness
B - Likely, e.g. once a month 2 – Minor injury, material lost, illness which needs
C - Very likely, almost certain, e.g. every day special treatment
3 – Major injury/death, big material lost, chronic
disease
Risk Level
Risk Assessment

1. Define the risks of those hazards

2. Define the probability of risk happens to the people or to the assets.
3. Define the severity of risk if exposed to the people or assets.
4. Define risk level based on probability and severity.
Risk Assessment
Activities II (HIRARC)

1. Define the risk of those hazards

2. Define the level of probability
3. Define the level of severity
4. Measure level of risk
5. Group presentation
Risks Control Hierarchy
Risk Control
Procedures
1. Define the control to reduce or eliminated the risks.
2. Define detail actions of controlling risks.
3. Measure the risk level after the actions.

Actions
Low risk & tolerable risk – no need action
Moderate risk – need action
High risk – need immediate action
Intolerable risk – do not continue until risk is reduced
Risk Control
Activities III (HIRARC)

1. Define risk control

2. Define action plan
3. Define level of new probability & severity
4. Measure level of risk
End
