THE Ideal Re-heat

13
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

 The thermal efficiency is:

W35  W6 4  W1 2


Q23  Q56

h3  h5   (h6  h4 )  (h2  h1 )
h3  h2   h6  h5 

14
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

Example 13.1 Consider a steam power plant that operates on the ideal reheat
Rankine cycle. The plant maintains the inlet of the high-pressure turbine at 600
psia and 600°F, the inlet of the low-pressure turbine at 200 psia and 600°F, and
the condenser at 10 psia. The net power produced by this plant is 5000 kW.
Determine the rate of heat addition and rejection and the thermal efficiency of the
cycle.

At state 1: h1 = hf@10psia = 161.25 Btu/lbm

v1 = vf@10psia = 0.01659 ft3/lbm

Wpump = v1(P2 – P1) = (0.01659 ft3/lbm)(600-100)lbf/in2 (1 Btu/5.404psia-ft3)

= 1.81 Btu/lbm
15
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

h2 = h1 + wpump
= 161.25 Btu/lbm + 1.81 Btu/lbm
= 263. 06 Btu/lmb

At state 3: P3 = 600 psia h3 = 1,289.9 Btu/lbm

T3 = 6000F s3 = 1.5325 Btu/lbm-R

At state 4: P4 = 200 psia

s4 = s3 = 1.5325 Btu/lbm-R

16
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

At state 5: P5 = 200 psia h5 = 1,322.3 Btu/lbm

T5 = 6000F s5 = 1.6771 Btu/lbm-R

At state 6: P6 = 10 psia

s6 = s5 = 1.6771 Btu/lbm-R

17
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

Thus:

18
REHEAT CYCLE EFFICIENCY

Thus, the rate of heat addition and rejection are:

Thus, thermal efficiency is :

19
The Rankine Cycle with Regeneration

 Heating of some of the compressed liquid is

done to raise the average temperature of heat
addition.

 Heat is supplied after the liquid is

compressed to a high pressure at State a.
