SCOLIOSIS June of each year has been declared as Scoliosis
Awareness Month since 2018 through
Proclamation No. 620 (Philippine Law).

The Proclamation aims to raise PUBLIC

AWARENESS, ENCOURAGE EARLY DETECTION
AND INTERVENTION, and create a sense of
community among individuals affected by
scoliosis, with the Department of Health leading
the promotion and organization of programs and
activities in collaboration with non-government
organizations, government agencies, local
government units, and the private sector.
SCOLIOSIS What is a scoliosis?

Scoliosis involves the spine or the backbone.

Normally, when looked from behind, the spine
appears straight, at times, with a little curve.

In scoliosis, there is an abnormal sideways curve

of the spine or backbone. The curves are often S-
or C-shaped.
The angle of the curves may be small, large, or
somewhere in between. But anything that
measures more than 10 degrees on an X-ray is
usually considered scoliosis.
SCOLIOSIS What is a scoliosis? vs kyphosis vs lordosis?

Today’s PEP Talk’s

focus:

SCOLIOSIS
SCOLIOSIS Why is it important to raise public awareness and
encourage early detection and intervention?
• Scoliosis is common. (estimated to be affecting
3% of the Philippine population; estimated to
be 3 million Filipinos with scoliosis – latest –
2024)
• Scoliosis is a progressive disease with no
known cure as majority are idiopathic (specific
cause is not known).
• Scoliosis can lead to serious complications if
not corrected early.
• A lot of Filipinos are not aware of the scoliosis
disease and its importance.
SCOLIOSIS Who are usually affected by the scoliosis?
Scoliosis can affect anybody anytime (although
the cause is not specifically known).
Thus, there is a classification by age of onset or
detection:
• Infantile idiopathic scoliosis is found in children
ages 0 to 3.
• Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is found in in
children ages 4 to 10.
• Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is found in
adolescents ages 11 to 18.
• Adult idiopathic scoliosis is found in patients
older than 18.
SCOLIOSIS Who are usually affected by the scoliosis?

• However, scoliosis is most common in late

childhood and the early teens, about 10 to 15
years old.
• Girls are more likely to develop it than boys.
• The condition can run in the family.
SCOLIOSIS What are the causes of scoliosis?
Causes are related to types of scoliosis:
• Idiopathic scoliosis – the most common, with
no known cause, genetics may play a role.
• Congenital scoliosis – present at birth due to
abnormal spinal development in the womb.
• Neuromuscular scoliosis – associated with
underlying neurological or muscular disorders
like cerebal palsy or muscular dystrophy.
• Degenerative scoliosis – occurs in older adults
due to age-related wear and tear of spine.
• Others – tumors, infections, injuries, etc.
SCOLIOSIS What are the causes of scoliosis?

It’s worth noting that scoliosis is NOT caused by

carrying heavy bags or backpacks, poor posture,
and choice of mattress, which are common
misconceptions.
SCOLIOSIS Is there a way to prevent scoliosis?

There is no known way to prevent a scoliosis from

developing.

The best-known ways to prevent a scoliosis from

worsening are early detection and prompt
treatment.
SCOLIOSIS What are the symptoms of scoliosis or when is
scoliosis suspected to be present short of
laboratory diagnostic procedures?

Scoliosis can cause discomfort, pain, and in

severe cases, functional limitations.

While most people with scoliosis have a mild

form of the disorder, scoliosis may sometimes
cause complications.
SCOLIOSIS What are the symptoms of scoliosis or when is
scoliosis suspected to be present short of laboratory
diagnostic procedures?

Symptoms include the following:

• Shoulders are uneven (one shoulder blade more

prominent than the other)
• The head is not centered directly above the pelvis
• One or both hips are raised or unusually high
• Rib cages are at different heights
• Waist is uneven
• The entire body leans to one side

Symptoms include the following signs:

prominent than the other)
• The head is not centered directly above the
pelvis
• One or both hips are raised or unusually high
• Rib cages are at different heights
• Waist is uneven
• The entire body leans to one side
SCOLIOSIS What are the complications of scoliosis?

• BREATHING PROBLEMS- the rib cage may press

against the lungs, making it more difficult to
breathe
• BACK PROBLEMS- people who had scoliosis as
children may be more likely to have chronic
back pain as adults, especially if their
abnormal curves are large and untreated
• APPEARANCE– as scoliosis worsens, it can
cause more noticeable changes — including
uneven hips and shoulders, prominent ribs,
and a shift of the waist and trunk to the side
SCOLIOSIS What are simple maneuvers to check for
scoliosis?

• Inspection on standing position

• Adams Forward Bend Test
SCOLIOSIS What are the laboratory diagnostic procedures
that may be done for scoliosis?

• X-ray of the whole length of spine

• Computed tomography scan
• Magnetic resonance imaging
SCOLIOSIS What are the laboratory diagnostic procedures
that may be done for scoliosis?

X-ray of the whole length of spine

• Scoliosis is present when the spine has one or
more abnormal curves of greater than 10°
(Cobb Angle) as measured on the x-ray by a
physician.

• Moderate – less than 40°

• Severe – More than 40°

SCOLIOSIS What are treatment options for scoliosis?
Depending on severity – mild, moderate, severe

• Observation
• Physiotherapy and exercises
• Braces - wearing a brace won’t cure scoliosis or
reverse the curve, but it usually prevents the
curve from worsening.
• Surgery (spinal fusion)

Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some spine

deformities continue to get more severe as
children grow.

SCOLIOSIS Why should children be screened for Scoliosis?

Scoliosis often develops rapidly in pre-

adolescence or adolescence.

The condition is usually painless, so there may be

no symptoms to indicate a developing scoliosis.
SCOLIOSIS When should children be screened for Scoliosis?

Girls should be first checked around 10-12 years

old.
Boys should be first checked around 11-13 years
old.

Earlier detection and intervention have been

shown to lead to better long-term outcomes for
the patient.
SCOLIOSIS How to screen for scoliosis?

• Inspection the whole body for anything that

will suggest scoliosis.

• Adams Forward Bend Test

• X-ray with Cobb Angle measurement
