SCOLIOSIS
SCOLIOSIS Why is it important to raise public awareness and
encourage early detection and intervention?
• Scoliosis is common. (estimated to be affecting
3% of the Philippine population; estimated to
be 3 million Filipinos with scoliosis – latest –
2024)
• Scoliosis is a progressive disease with no
known cure as majority are idiopathic (specific
cause is not known).
• Scoliosis can lead to serious complications if
not corrected early.
• A lot of Filipinos are not aware of the scoliosis
disease and its importance.
SCOLIOSIS Who are usually affected by the scoliosis?
Scoliosis can affect anybody anytime (although
the cause is not specifically known).
Thus, there is a classification by age of onset or
detection:
• Infantile idiopathic scoliosis is found in children
ages 0 to 3.
• Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is found in in
children ages 4 to 10.
• Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is found in
adolescents ages 11 to 18.
• Adult idiopathic scoliosis is found in patients
older than 18.
SCOLIOSIS Who are usually affected by the scoliosis?
• Observation
• Physiotherapy and exercises
• Braces - wearing a brace won’t cure scoliosis or
reverse the curve, but it usually prevents the
curve from worsening.
• Surgery (spinal fusion)
