Discussion
Research question 1: What effects does TikTok
have on students English speaking skills?

Positive effects: Negative effects:

1. Vocabulary 1. Content reliability
2. Pronunciation & Intonation 2. Information overload
3. Fostering confidence in 3. Distraction
English speaking
4. Making learning more
enjoyable
Positive effect on vocabulary:
● TikTok allows students to make improvements regarding
vocabulary and cultivate English-speaking skills, which is in
line with Herlisya & Wiratno (2022).
● TikTok offers students an opportunity to have exposure to
real-word English, daily communication as well as authentic
material.
● TikTok helps students with higher accuracy of word choice
and a higher contextual appropriateness.
Positive effect on pronunciation & intonation:
● Students have favorable attitude towards TikTok as a tool to improve
pronunciation & intonation. This finding is consistent with Merizawati et
al. (2023), Adityo & Novitasari (2023), Pratiwi et al. (2021), and Pertami
et al. (2023).
● Trends on TikTok such as “Duet me”, “Shadowing” help students enhance
their pronunciation (Hsieh et al., 2013) and intonation (Sugiarto et al.,
2020) by shadowing.
Positive effects:
● TikTok can increase users’ level of confidence in English
speaking, which is on consensus with (Yulita & Hertiki,
2023).
● Similar to Ferstephanie & Pratiwi (2021), the findings show
that TikTok reduces stress and makes learning more enjoyable
due to its algorithm.
Negative effects:
● Students concern about content reliability. According to Nguyen et al.
(2022), Garcia et al. (2022), and Arslan (2020), a sizable percentage of
videos on TikTok might not offer trustworthy information.
● Students experience information overload, which affects learners decision
making ability (Iselin, 1989) and leads them to irrelevant or inappropriate
content.
● Students are prone to distraction due to the short duration of a TikTok
video, which is in line with Agting et al. (2022).
Research question 2: What strategies can
benefit the user to effectively improve
their speaking skill using TikTok?
● Students advise following verified users and leveraging
recommendations from peers and followers to discover
relevant channels.
● Students suggest choosing manageable content in advance can
enhance study efficiency. Similarly, Verkoeijen et al. (2006)
suggests that self-selected content can augment both the depth
and extent of study.
Research question 2: What strategies can benefit
the user to effectively improve their speaking skill
using TikTok?

● Students suggest strategies to maximize the use of TikTok by establishing

reasonable time limits for learning sessions. As hypothesized by Kearns &
Gardiner (2007), individuals who engage in more time management
behaviors tend to perceive themselves as more effective at work.

exploring additional approaches through rigorous
experimentation
