Introduction Map of Chandigarh
Post-Independence Creation
As part of the partition of India in 1947, the Indian
province of Punjab was divided into East Punjab in India
and West Punjab in Pakistan. The capital, Lahore,
became part of Pakistan.
Le Corbusier
Albert Mayer
Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, envisioned a new city to
serve as the capital of Punjab, instead of shifting the capital to an existing
city.Partap Singh Kairon and Edward Nirmal Mangat Rai played key roles in
establishing Chandigarh as the capital.
Albert Mayer was initially tasked with designing the city based
on superblocks and green spaces. After Mayer's partner's death,
Le Corbusier took over and created the city's layout with sectors
and administration buildings.
Chandigarh has been rated as one of the wealthiest towns in India. The
