Weft Replenishment

1
The Work of a Weaver

• The main work of a weaver on non automatic

looms are :
(a) General supervision and inspection of the yarn and
machine
(b) Repairing warp and weft breaks
(c) Stopping the loom to replace the weft package when the
yarn on the pirn is exhausted.

2
Two main methods are available to replace
the weft package automatically

(i) Shuttle change

(ii) Pirn change

3
If a loom is running at 216 picks/min and has a crank radius of 140 mm and the
distance AB is 1·3 mm, then:

Hence θ = 7° 48', and transfer must therefore be complete in 2 x 7°48' = 15°36',

which represents:

This is less than the time involved in accelerating the shuttle.

Weft feeler mechanism
• The main function of the feeler mechanism is
to sense the weft on the pirn and initiate
the pirn changing mechanism to act when the
weft has been almost exhausted on the pirn
• If the weft is present on the pirn the feeler will
allow the loom to continue working

• The shuttle protector lever A contacts the peg
B and gives a forward throw to the shuttle
protector C.
• The latch depressor D which moves along
the protector C releases its hold on the peg
E with the result that the peg follows the
depressor under pressure from the latch
spring F and ultimately allows the latch G to
swing upwards into line with the bunter H.

• As the sley moves forward for beating up of weft
and the shuttle having reached the battery end,
the bunter engages the notch on the latch forcing
it backwards against the resistance of the
hammer coil spring thereby depressing
the transfer hammer.
• During the downward movement the hammer
imparts a sharp blow to the fully wound pirn that
is immediately underneath, held by the battery.

22
• The bunter and latch is disabled as soon as
the transfer of pirn is done by the hammer with
the receding sley which breaks the contact with
the bunter and latch. The hammer returns to
its original position due to the action of
hammer coil spring.
