What does

your heart do?

Autumn
P5 D
Heart

•It's the muscle at the centre of your

circulation system, pumping blood
around your body as your heart
beats. This blood sends oxygen and
nutrients to all parts of your body,
and carries away unwanted carbon
dioxide and waste products.
What does resting
heart rate mean?
• Even if you don't always feel it, your
heart is always beating. (You knew that,
though.) If your heart rate is the
number of times your heart beats per
minute, your resting heart rate, then, is
the number of times your heart beats
per minute while you're at rest.
What happen to your
heart during exercises?
• During exercise, your heart typically
beats faster so that more blood gets out
to your body. Your heart can also
increase its stroke volume by pumping
more forcefully or increasing the amount
of blood that fills the left ventricle before
it pumps
What will happen to your
resting heart rate if you do
exercises everyday?
• Exercise delivers oxygen and
nutrients to your tissues and
helps your cardiovascular
system work more efficiently.
And when your heart and lung
health improve, you have more
energy to tackle daily chores.
