What is the flood

A flood is the overflow of water onto normally dry land, often caused
by heavy rain, melting snow, or storm surges.

The effect of the flood.

Determinantal environmental effects of flooding can


include soil and bank erosion, bed erosion, siltation, or
landslides. It can damage vegetation and pollutants carried
by flood water can impact water quality, habitats, and flora
and fauna. Flooding can however play a beneficial role in
natural habitats. Others are Health and safety risks. and
Economic impacts.

What reason occurs for the flood?


Floods happen when there is an overflow of water onto land that is
normally dry. This can be caused by a variety of factors,
 Heavy rainfall
 Rapid snowmelt
 Storm surges
 Blocked waterways
 Dam or levee failure

What are the areas?

Sri Lanka is prone to flooding, particularly during the University of Ruhuna
two monsoon seasons: the southwest monsoon (May to
September) and the northeast monsoon (December to
February). The main areas affected by floods in Sri
Lanka include:
I. Colombo and Western province
II. Gampaha
III.Kalutara
IV.Rathnapura
V. Kegalle
VI.Gall
VII.Matara
