The Middle Ages

• We learned about the collapse of the

Western Empire (Rome) because of
attacks.
• These attacks were done by multiple
Germanic tribes.
• In the 5th century, Germanic tribes took
over the Western Empire. This effected
the government and culture.
• After Rome’s decline (year 500 to 1500),
this period of time is known as the Middle
Ages, or the Medieval period.
Medieval society

• During this time, a new society emerged

based on:

1. Roman heritage (the traditions left from

Rome)
2. The Roman Catholic Church (which had
a lot of power)
3. Germanic tribes who entered the area
Effects of the Germanic invasions

1. Weak trade: Merchants got attacked, trade

became hard to do, and money was difficult to
get.
2. Downfall of cities: People started leaving
cities.
3. Population shift: Nobles left cities and went
to rural areas, because big cities no longer had
strong governments.
4. Decline of learning: Ignorant Germanics
came, forced people to speak their language,
and did not care about schools. They also had
no written language.
