NORMAL CURVE AND Z - SCORE

We say the data is "normally distributed".

• The Normal Distribution has:

• mean = median = mode

• symmetry about the center
• 50% of values less than the mean
and 50% greater than the mean
Standard Deviations

• The Standard Deviation is a measure of how

spread out numbers are
Example

• 95% of students at school are between 1.1m

and 1.7m tall.
• Assuming this data is normally distributed can
you calculate the mean and standard
deviation?
The mean is halfway between 1.1m and 1.7m:
Mean = (1.1m + 1.7m) / 2
= 1.4m
95% is 2 standard deviations either side of the mean (a total of
4 standard deviations) so:
1 standard deviation = (1.7m-1.1m) / 4
= 0.6m / 4 = 0.15m
And this is the result:
SD: Of what use
• Likely to be within 1 standard deviation (68
out of 100 will be)
• very likely to be within 2 standard deviations
(95 out of 100 will be)
• almost certainly within 3 standard deviations
(997 out of 1000 will be)
Z score/Critical ratio/Relative
deviate/Standard normal Variate
Formula for z-score

z is the "z-score" (Standard Score)

x is the value to be standardized
μ is the mean
σ is the standard deviation
Questions
• Gastric emptying time is 2hours with S.D of 0.5hours.How frequently one can
expect a gastric emptying time of more than 4 hours?

• A random sample of 900 children was found to have a mean fat fold thickness at
triceps of 3.4mm with an SD of 2.3mm. What percentage of children will be having
fat fold thickness less than 3.2mm?

• Mean fasting blood sugar in 1000 males is90mg% with a SD of 10mg%. mark area
in the normal distribution curve representing male having blood sugar level less
than 78mg% and more than 95mg%. comment whether blood sugar of 75mg% is
normal and 120mg% is abnormal.
