Sequences 12/06/2024

Learning Objectives:

• Able to continue a sequence

• Able to use a term-to-term rule to

generate a sequence

• Able to use a position-to-term rule to

generate a sequence
Sequences
Key words:

• Sequence – A list of numbers or shapes that

follow some pattern

• Term – A number or shape in the sequence

• Common Difference – The constant rate at which

a sequence increases or
decreases
Sequences
• Term-to-term rule – given some terms and the
rule

• Example - 1st term: 7 Rule: Add 9

3rd term: 13 Rule: Subtract 6

Your turn…
• Generate the first 5 terms given the following
information
Term Term-to-term rule Sequence
a) 1st term = 3 Add 7 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
b) 3rd term = 16 Subtract 9 -2, 7, 16, 25, 34
c) 5th term = 3 Divide by 2 48, 24, 12, 6, 3
d) 1st term = 5 Multiply by 2, add 1 5, 11, 23, 47, 95
e) 2nd term = 2 Multiply by 4,
divide by 2 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
f) 4th term = 202 Multiply by 3, add 1
7, 22, 67, 202, 607

– Questions 1 – 5
– Review exercise
Sequences
• Position-to-term rule – can generate any term
in the sequence given its position

• Example: Tn = 2n + 5
What do
you notice
about the
terms?
Starter
• Complete this sequence:
23, 19, __, 11, 7, __

• Generate the first 5 terms of the sequences

below
First term: 5 Rule: Multiply by 10, add 5
Third term: 28 Rule: multiply by 3, subtract 2

Sequences 12/06/2024

Learning Objectives:

• Able to continue a sequence

• Able to make and justify predictions

• Able to deduce a general rule

• Investigate the relationship between the
number of frogs on each side and the number
of slides and jumps it takes to move all of one
colour frog to the other side.

• Call the number of frogs on each side n, and

try and deduce a general rule
Starter
• Fill in the missing space in these sequences:
