INTRODUCTION:

● Most commonly used instrument for performance


evaluation.
● Enables the observer to note whether a
trait is present or not.
● Provides a simple Yes/No judgement.
DEFINITION:

According to British Columbia Institute of technology,


“A Checklist is a tool for identifying the
presence or absence of conceptual knowledge,skills or
behaviour”.
CHARACTERISTICS:

● Observe one respondent at a time.


● Clearly specify the behaviour to be observed.
● Observer should be trained well.
● Use only carefully prepared one to avoid complex traits.

● Should be precise, simple,easy to use and eliminate the
mistakes.
● Use only when you are interested in observing a particular
characteristics.
CONSTRUCTION OF A CHECKLIST:
● Express each item in clear, simple language.

● Avoid lifting direct statements from the text.

● Avoid negative statements where ever possible.

● Make sure that each item is clearly yes or no, or false and true.

● Review the items independently.


STEPS IN DEVELOPING A CHECKLIST:
TECHNIQUES TO DEVELOP A CHECKLIST:

● Review the learning outcome and criteria.


● State the level of success required for the checklist to be
considered completed.
● From a procedure/process pick those items that are
required for a good performance.
● Group similar items.

Procedural Checklist:

It is a structured document used to ensure that specific


procedure or process is followed correctly and completely.
Communication checklist:

It is a tool used to ensure effective and efficient


communication within an organization team or during specific
events or process.
Project Checklist:
It is a comprehensive tool used to plan, organize and manage
the various tasks, activities and milestones associated with a
project.
To-do Checklist:

It is a straight forward tool for managing tasks and activities.It


helps individuals organize their work,set priorities and track
progress.
AREAS OF USING A CHECKLIST:

1. Clinical areas
2. Institution
3. Research purpose
4. Business survey
5. Immunization programme
6. Procedure demonstration
ADVANTAGES:
● Helps to evaluate learning activities that involve a
procedure process and some aspect of personal social
adjustment.
● Allows inter-individual comparisons.
● Provide a sample method to record observations.

● Decrease the chance of error in observation.


● Objectively evaluate traits or characteristics.
● Useful to evaluate those processes that can be subdivided
into a series of clear and separate actions.
DISADVANTAGES:
● Limited application
● Determine only presence or absence of actions.
● Does not indicate quality of performance.
● Only a limited component of overall clinical performance
can be evaluated.
Conclusion
In nursing checklists are usefull in evaluating performance
skills that can be divided into series of specific actions.
In addition to its use in procedure evaluation, checklist
can also be used to evaluate products
In the area of personal – social development the checklist
can be a convenient method of recording evidence of
growth towards specific learning outcome s
