MGA – Megger Grid Analytics ( Metrycom )

Megger Grid Analytics empowers electric companies

with unique visibility on their grids

5
Principle of Operation

 Three sensors constantly sample and record

currents and voltages information (waveforms)
 Once an outage or other anomality occurs, the
waveforms are sent from the two secondary SCADA, GIS MetryView
sensors (SU) to the gateway-sensor (GS) which Control center
analyzes the 3-phase waveforms and detects &

Cellular
classifies a fault
 The information is then sent MetryView server
usually via a cellular network
 The MetryView server stores the information from
the sensors, performs additional analysis, display
the results, and send selected information to the
DMS/SCADA

8
Installation type : The Mesh-Radio Option

Remark: MS5000-MU (master sensor) and MS5000-SU (regular sensor) have the same hardware

9
System : Direct secured communication from Sensor to DMS

 MS5000-GS sensor sends information directly to the DMS using DNP3/IEC104 via a private APN
 In parallel, the MS5000-GS sensor communicates with MetryView software for sensor management
and grid analytics. This channel can be TLS encrypted and protected by the private APN
 Radio connection between the sensors is protected by AES128 encryption
 Users can access MetryView by a web browser in the internal network

→ Reduce fire maintenance, finance) as well
& electrocution as consumers
Risks
 MS5000 delivers increased
Grid Visibility value as customer use and
3 Overload, Direction of power flow,

2 Identify weak spots in the grid, Broken
conductors, Recurring arcs and high-impedance-faults,
Missing phases, Harmonics, etc.
→ Reduce number of interruptions (SAIFI)
→ Reduce maintenance costs
Immediate location of the faulty network segment
1 → Reduce search costs
→ Reduce damages due to re-energizing faulted lines
→ Reduce average outage duration (SAIDI)
12
Benefits of the MetrySense-5000 solution

1 Immediate location of the faulty network segments

→ Reduce outage times (SAIDI)
 Meet the regulator’s requirements, reduce losses to the customers
 Reduced loss of revenues from energy not supplied
→ Reduce cost of search
→ Reduce damage to grid’s infrastructure due to re-energizing
faulted lines during the search

MetrySense-5000 Benefits – continued

2 Analytics and predictive maintenance

 Identify weak spots in the grid
 Impulses
 Leakage
 Broken conductors
 Recurring arcs and high-impedance-faults
 Missing phases
 Harmonics
 Detect location of transient faults (which are very hard to locate without
sensors)
→ Reduce number of interruptions (SAIFI)
→ Reduce maintenance costs

MetrySense-5000 Benefits – continued
3 Grid Visibility
 Detect overloads
 Directions of power flows
 Power thefts
 Reactive power, Volt/Var
 Provide DER related information
4 → Support Grid Optimization
Safety
 Detecting of hazardous conditions
 Detecting faults that sometimes cannot be detected by the present protection such as:
 High impedance faults like vegetation touching the line
 Broken conductors
 Immediate detection of fault’s location eliminates trial and error and reduces repeated
faults
→ Reduce electrocution risks
→ Reduce fire risks
15
MS5000 : High precision in a large current ranges

 Nominal current range: 0-600A

 Current measurement accuracy:
 < 0.5 % typical 100A-600A
 < 0.25A typical for low current loads
 Precise timing synchronization between
sensors on different phases
 <30us typical
 Designed for the operation of 10-20 years in
the field
 IP67 High quality current
transformer
