Definition of Pronoun

Pronoun is a word that is used to replace a


noun in sentence.Pronouns take the place
of one or more nouns or a group of words
in a sentence. Like nouns, they can be
used to refer a person, place, or thing

Ex : • Do you like the president? I don’t like the president.The


president is toopompous.With pronouns, we can say :

•Do you like the president? I don’t like him. He is too pompous.
.

repeated many times in a sentence of
paragraph and As a subject in a sentence,

Type of pronoun

1. Personal pronouns are used in


various contexts, including as the
subject of a sentence, object of a verb
or preposition, demonstrating
possession, emphasizing, or referring
action back to the subject. They have
three cases: nominative, possessive,
and objective.

Example : I can give you the


telephone number she left.

Meanwhile, if viewed from the aspect of its posistion in a


sentence, personal pronouns are divided into 2 groups

a. Nominative Case (Subjective Case)


Nominative case involves personal pronouns acting as subjects
in sentences, coming before verbs like "to be" or "regular."
Objective case includes I, You, They, We, She, He, and It.

Example : ( Before the verb to be ) (Before regular verb )


I am a lawyer. I go to school
You are a soldiers. You study english
She is a nurse.
They are armies
b. Objective Case

Objective case is a personal pronoun that functions as an


object in a sentence. Included in the objecttive case are :
Me,You, Them, Us, He, Him, It. Objective Case must be
after verbor after preposition.

Example :
( After verb ) ( After preposition )

He gives me a book. I don’t listen to him.


I saw him yesterday. They go with us.
I calll them now. The books are for them

2. Possessive Pronouns
Possessive pronouns, typically personal pronouns, are used to indicate
ownership of something.
• If the possessive pronoun is separrated from the noun by the
one

Example : This car is mine.


That bag is yours
Those houses are theirs.
Our vacation starts next week.s

• If the noun is understood


Nouns are understood if the possessive adjective is followed by
a noun + and+ possessive pronoun

Example: his horse and mine


her flowers and yours
my house and yours

• The possessive pronoun is preceded by "of."
The possessive pronoun is preceded by the preposition "of”.

Example: that horse of his


that cat of hers
those flowers of yours

• The possessive pronoun after "of"


Possessive pronouns are placed after "of”.

Example: a friend of mine


a house of ours

a kitten of theirs

• Possessive pronoun "whose which comes from the question word "who”.

Example : whose pencils are those?

3. Reflexive Pronouns She herself cooked the rice last night.
Reflexive pronouns are personal

4. Intensive pronoun

Intensive pronoun also called "emphatic pronoun" is a pronoun that


functions to provide confirmation or emphasis on the subject
statement so that it becomes firm and strong.
Intensive pronouns have the same word form as reflexive pronouns

Here are some examples of its use in sentences :

• I myself helped you yesterday.

• You yourself must go to his house.

• He himself accompanied me to the party.

5. Demonstrative Pronoun
Pronoun (Demonstrative Pronoun) Demonstrative pronoun is a pronoun that is used to
indicate the object, animal or person in question.
Included in demonstrative pronouns are the following :

a. This (this) is used to indicate objects, people or animals in the singular that are close at
hand. Some examples of its use in sentences:

- This is his pen.


- This is my book.
- This is Kayonna.
- This is my father.

b. These (this) is used to indicate objects, people or animals in the plural form that are
close at hand. Some examples of its use in sentences:

- These are my friends.


- These are his cats.

c. That (that) is used to indicate objects, people or animals in the singular form that are far
away.
- That is my bag.
- That is his brother
- That is her sister.
d. Those (those) are used to indicate objects, people or animals in the plural that are far
away. Some examples of its use:
- Those are your bags.
- These are your bags.Those are his motorcycles.
- Those are their houses.

Demonstrative pronouns are also used:


To avoid repeating the same words, for example:

- I prefer to buy this book than that book.


- I prefer to buy this book than that.
These students draw cats better than those
students.
These students draw cats better thn those.

- As a main sentence, for example :


- Those who are dilligent must be clever
- Those who are serious must be seccessful

6. Indefinite Pronoun
Indefinite pronoun is a pronoun that does not have a specific antecedent.
Words that are included as indefinite pronouns are : all, any, anybody,
anyone, anything, everybody, everyone, everything, most, nobody, no
one, nothing, one, somebody, someone, something.

1. Everyone, everybody, everything, everywhere


Used at singular type, example :

• Everyone I know has gone.


• You can ask about it to everyone there.
• Such an interesting boook can be bought everywhere.
