SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

WHAT CAN BE MEASURED, CAN BE IMPROVED.

 Ishwarappa Teli.
 Shashank Raut.
 Sachin Sawant.
 Prashant Shirke
OBJECTIVE
To use anaerobic digestor to process wet
waste and use biproduct for PMPML
(Balewadi – Pune route).
To use soft computing tool for
seggregation and collection.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
 There are many methods of treating the waste & PMC has
implemented huge treatment plants spending lots of money . But
it seems to be inefficient because people are not segregating
their waste. Also it creates lots of environmental problems.
 SWM contains 60% wet & biodegradable waste. This can be
decompose very easily. Reduction of waste by using anaerobic
digester & providing purely segregated wet waste by using
software technologies to reduce the load on landfill & thereby
giving a sustainable solution with reduction in cost.
TYPES OF DIFFERENT WASTE
PROBLEM SOLUTION

 EWASTE  NOTIFY IF SUCH WASTE IS

 EXP MEDICINE PRESENT
  STEPS WILL BE TAKEN
PESTICIDES

ACCORDINGLY.
PLASTIC COVERING
 CONDOM DIAPER PADS.
 COCONUTS
EXISTING
 PUNE POPULATION = 31,24,458
 8,00,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN PUNE.
 BASIC CALCULATION OF WASTE= 350-450Gms PER HEAD PER DAY
 TOTAL WASTE IN PUNE 1300 TO 1500-1700 Tad.
 PUNE HAS 15 WARDS.
 PMC IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SWM AS PER SWM RULES2000.
 FOR SWM PURPOSE CITY CAN BE DIVIDED INTO 2 TYPES
 A) BUILDING BEFORE 2010
 B) BUILDINGS AFTER 2010

RECENT NEWS…..
Kasturirangan Task Force on Waste to Energy
submitted its report to the Planning Commission

 Kasturirangan Task Force on Waste to Energy submitted

its report on 14 May 2014 to the Planning Commission.
The report highlighted the need for an integrated
approach towards Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
management, stressing reduction and segregation of
waste at source and also efficient utilization of various
components of the waste.
 Considering the projected waste generation of 165
million tonnes by 2031, the requirement of land for
setting up landfill for 20 years could be as high as 66
thousand hectares of precious land, which our country
cannot afford to waste.
PMC
 Currently the plants in use are-
 Noble Exchange Envt. Solution,Baner and Talegaon-300 TPD
BIO CNG.
 Ajinkya,Biofort and Disha,Hadapsar and Ramtekdi- 300 TPD
Vermicompost.
 Rochem , Ramtekdi- 300-350 TPD RDF (Environmental
Issues).
 Hanjir Biotech , Uruli Devachi and Fursungi – 1000 TPD
(Blacklisted).
PROBLEMS WE VIEW
 Segregation is first step. It is on free will of people
awareness and courts order are like “smoking kills”.
 No fear in mind of people for segregation, throwing
waste on road etc.
 No proof of waste collected, or will be taken date or last
man delivery of service is not assured.
 We see waste on road but don’t know who to convey.
 Many big treatment plants like Hanjir has to blacklist
because of waste is mixed which reduces the efficiency
of the plant.
 SWM has very low budget out of total budget ; out of
which all the money is spend over the transportation of
waste.
OUR VIEW
 Need for 100% transperancy in swm process.
 Segregation is not done at source. No data no proof of people
segregating waste at source level.
 Collection system fails to collect and it worsens in monsoon, and
unseasonal rainfall. No record no proof of waste collected.
 Waste is mixed and transported.
 At household level waste is generaly given in plastic, so it is
pandoras box.No clue what’s inside.
 If not attended waste is dumped on roadside ,open area & in river
 No fear in people.
 No fee taken for SWM purpose.
OUR SOLUTIONS
 TO CREATE AN APP FOR -
 1. SEGRGATION.
 2 COLLECTION.
 3 LITTER FREE CITY.
THE SEGGREGATED WASTE WILL BE SEND TO
ANAEROBIC DIGESTOR AND PURIFYING IT FOR FIT TO
USE IN CNG BUSES.
SURPLUS SHOULD BE USED FOR COLLECTING VEHICLES.
BIOGAS
 As 60% waste is wet, we can easily degrade it & can
obtain the energy.
 We are considering MSW to fed biogas instead of cow
dung.
 This plant will be installed at ward itself so the waste is
reduced at the source itself.
 This biogas will be refined and will convert into CNG at
the plant.
 This CNG will be use to run either PMPML bus or
tipping trucks.
But this is possible only if the waste is
SEGGREGATED.

And “It’s never too late to begin…….”

WASTE REDUCTION IN WARD
PROBLEM SOLUTION

 TRANSFER OF WASTE AND  BUILDING AFTER 2010 HAVE

COLLECTION REQUIRE TO CREATE
FUEL N MONEY. INFRASTRUCTURE FOR WET
 PROCESSING PLANTS FAIL WASTE MANAGEMENT.
DUE TO UNSEGRIGATED  IF WET WASTE IS
WASTE. SEGREGATED PROPERLY IT
 CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE
WASTE TO PLANT N THEN
TO SUCH PLANTS.
LANDFILL IS COSTLY
 APP HAS BARCODE INFO OF
AFFAIR
PLANTS AND ITS CAPACITY
AND FUNCTIONING.
 SO WET WASTE WITHIN
WARD IS REDUCED.
BIOGAS IN TRANSPORT
HOW APP WORKS
(A) SEGREGATION.

 RFID will be given to owner.

 Volunteer will check and accept only segregated waste. He
will take the photo and will upload on interface.
 Then it will scanned and collected by ghantagadi and
hence the proof will be there that the waste is collected.
 Then it will be send to further processing.
 If the waste is not segregated, it will rejected.
BENEFITS
EXISTING OUR SOLUTION

 1. WHO CREATES WASTE IS  1 DUE TO BARCODE DATA IS

UNKNOWN. AVAILABLE.
 2. NO CHECK FOR  2. CHECK FOR
SEGREGATION. SEGREGATION
 3. NO OF HOUSES  3 BIT BY BIT DATA IS AVAIL.
GENERATING IS NOT  4 NO LOOPHOLE FOR
KNOWN AS SOCITY IS BLAME GAME.
CONSIDERED  5 DISCIPLINE AND
 4 NO PROOF FOR FUTURE COMPLUSION FOR
REFENCE SO BLAME GAME SEGREGSTION.
STARTS  6. WET WASTE NEVER IN
 5 UNORGANISED FREE WILL PLASTIC & OTHER WILL BE
OF PEOPLE SEGRIGATED.

COLLECTION
 Problem: no monitoring on which area is collected and
which is unattended. No fixed time for collecting
vehicles. No data how much area is covered and how
much is left. Last man delivery is not achieved.
 Solution:
 Confirming msg generation.
 Figuring out time required and esstimate a time
 Confirm msg to secretary and user that waste is
collected.
 Map enables to know area covered and area required.
BENEFITS
EXISTING SOLUTION

 1 NO MONITORING  1 TRACKING OF VEHICLES

 2 AREA COVERED UNKNOWN  2 MAPED OUT SO ARE
 3 NO CONFIRMATION OF REMAING AND COMPLETED
WASTE COLLECTED SO WILL BE DATA.
BLAME GAME  3 MSG TO SECRETARY SO
 4 NO CHECK ON CONFIRMATION IS POSSIBLE.
COLLECTORS  4 DUE TO MSG THERE IS A
TRANSPERANCY
LITTER FREE ROADS
 By passing on road we see containers full of waste.
 Some people throw it directly on road.
 In this case anybody can take picture of it and upload it on
interface.
 The notification will be send on the interface ;The location
will be tracked by GPS and the corresponding tipping
truck will be send for collection.
 This process should happen within 1 hour.
 Then the photo of performance will be uploaded on
interface for conformance.
LITTERFREE CITY
SOLUTION
PROBLEM

 1.WASTE LIES ON ROAD BUT  VOLENTEERS USERS WILL

PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE TAKE PIC AND UPLOAD ON
WHO TO INFORM. APP
 2. CONTAINER FULL  PIC WILL BE UPLOADED ON
 3 PEOPLE THROW WASTE GPS AND WILL BE SEEN ON
ON OPEN AREA RIVER. DASHBOARD.
 VOLENTEERS FOR SUCH
UNATENDED WASTE WILL
CLEAR AND AGAIN UPLOAD
THE PIC WITH SAME GPS
LOCATION TO USER.
ENVIORNMENTAL BENEFITS
 SEGREGATION WILL HELP IN REDUCING WET AT SOURCE AND
DRY WOULD BE RECYCLED FOR PLASTIC METAL GLASS PAPER.
 COLLECTION IMPROVED WILL HELP IN PROPER DISPOL AND
QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS WILL SUGGEST THE PARAMETER
REQUIRED FOR IMPROVING
 OPEN DUMPING BREEDS DOG COW MOSQUITO. SO LITERFREE
WILL REDUCES THERE NUMBERS.
 REDUCTION OF UNWANTED VOLUME WILL INCREASE THE
LIFE OF LANDFILL.
 AS LAND PRICES ARE HIGH AND OPPOSITION TO LANDFILL IT
IS MUST TO REDUCE WASTE AT SOURCE SO AS TO USE URALI
DEVACHI FOR SOME MORE YEARS INSTEAD OF SEARCHING .
FUTURE….
ZERO GARBAGE IS
POSSIBLE
