AGREEMENT RESPONSES
SO - NEITHER

A class by Mr. Jean Paul Quiñonez

We usually use short answers for
simple questions
 Are you a doctor?
Yes, I am.

 Do you like to watch TV?

No, we don’t.

 Can Maria dance «Marinera»?

Yes, she can.

 Does your father work every day?

No, he doesn’t.
However,
 We use agreement responses for not questions.

Those responses are used in:

 AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES (SO)

 NEGATIVE SENTENCES (NEITHER)

AFFIRMATIVE
 We are very good students.
So am I.
 Carlos studies in a big university.
So do my brothers.
 I can dance Salsa very well.
Oh! So can my sister.
 My teacher knows a lot about history.
Well, so does my mother.
NEGATIVE
 My mother doesn’t like apples.
Neither do I.
 You are not from Ecuador.
Neither is Pedro.
 Those cars can’t climb the hill.
Neither can your motorbike.
 The Browns don’t travel abroad every summer.
Oh, neither do we.
REMEMBER
Use auxiliary verbs that correspond to
the sentence and tense utilized
accordingly

Present simple:
Am, am not
Is, isn’t
Are, aren’t

Modal verbs:
Can, can’t
 SO corresponds to responses for affirmative sentences
and the auxiliary has to be in the affirmative form.

 NEITHER corresponds to responses for negative

sentences and the auxiliary has to be in the negative
form
BUT…If the response is opposite
 Use the auxiliary verb in the form that is opposite to the original sentence preceded
by but..
Your teacher can speak French very well.
So can I.
My father can’t.
José is going to get married next year.
So am I.
But my brother isn’t.
You aren’t really good at math.
Neither do your brothers.
Oh! I am.
