• Table 13.1 summarises some of the differences between the two methods of reproduction.
Asexual reproduction in plants
• The male gametes are contained within the pollen grains and
the female gametes are egg cells or ova.
Production of gametes
• The gametes are produced by meiosis in
structures in the flowers.
• When seeds are dispersed from the parent plant they are usually very dry, containing
only about 10% water.
• This low water content restricts a seed’s metabolism, so that it can remain alive but
dormant (inactive) for a long time, sometimes for many years.
