Introduction
Rebars are steel bars used to
enhance the tensile strength
of concrete

Understanding rebars' quality

and performance is vital for
structural integrity and safety
in local construction projects.
Background Information
Developed in France around 1850, steel rebars has been are
essential in concrete construction for over a century.

Various types include carbon steel, stainless steel, glass-fiber-

reinforced, and epoxy-coated, with carbon steel being common

Sizes range from 10mm to 40mm, with different grades like 250
N/mm2 for mild steel and 460 N/mm2 for high yield steel.
Problem Statement
The manufacturing process of common reinforcing steel bars
relies heavily on the recycling of scrap metal as a charging
material.

However, due to the variation in scrap feeds and impurities

present in the scraps, the toughness and mechanical properties
of the reinforcing bars may vary, leading to substandard
products.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of this research is to investigate and evaluate the toughness of
16mm rebars used in Osun state.
While the objectives are;

To evaluate the mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile

strength, and percentage elongation) of the rebars

To determine the conformity of 16mm rebars to British standards.

To conduct experimental testing on 16mm rebars to determine key

toughness parameters such as impact resistance

Brief review of past works
Anthony Ede et al., 2019 studied the physical and mechanical properties
of 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and 20mm rebars, testing them in Lagos State
Material Testing Laboratory from various construction sites in 10 Local
Government areas of Lagos.

Ashenafi Atsbeha. 2017 carried out an analysis on mechanical properties

of locally produced reinforcement bars for building construction
applications. The study was undertaken to find out the physical and
chemical properties of the reinforcing steel bars used in Ethiopia
Construction Industry in relation to their level of conformity with the ASTM
standards

Proposed Methodology
Tensile testing : Tensile test results
provide valuable information about the
material's strength and ductility, which are
essential for assessing conformity to
British Standards

Impact testing : A pendulum is released

to swing and strike the specimen at a
specified velocity. The impact energy
absorbed by the specimen during fracture
is recorded by measuring the swing of the
pendulum before and after the impact.
