6TH SEMESTER
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, SIBSAGAR POLYTECHNIC.
INTRODUCTION
• TRISHUL TRADING CO. PVT. LTD. DEALS WITH
MANUFACTURING AND REPEARING OF TRANSFORMER.
• LOCATED IN FRONT OF SUKANPUKHURI HIGH SCHOOL,
SIVASAGAR.
• MANUFACTURES TRANSFORMERS OF DIFFERENT RANGES:-
25KVA, 63KVA, 100KVA, 160KVA ETC.
INTRODUCTION TO TRANSFORMER
• Transformer is a static electric device which transfers power from one
circuit (Primary) to other circuit (Secondary).
• Transformer can decrease or increase the voltage.
• It can help make the right power (Voltage) accessible to us when we
need it.
FIGURE OF
TRANSFORMER
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• Transformer works on the principle of Faraday’s law of
electromagnetic induction.
• According to this law “When the magnetic flux through a coil
changes an emf induces in the coil”.
• When an AC supply is applied to the primary coil, it generates a
changing magnetic field around the primary coil and the core.
• This changing magnetic field induces an alternating voltage in the
secondary coil through electromagnetic induction.
TYPES OF TRANSFORMER
TRANSFORMERS ARE MAINLY OF TWO TYPES-
• STEP UP TRANSFORMER – Used to increase the voltage from
primary winding to secondary winding.
• STEP DOWN TRANSFORMER- It decreases the voltage from the
primary winding to secondary winding.
THERE ARE SOME OTHER TYPES OF TRANSFORMERS-
Autotransformer, Current Transformer, Potential Transformer,
Isolation Transformer, Core type transformer, Shell Type Transformer.
PARTS OF A TRANSFORMER
• THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF A TRANSFORMER ARE-
CORE, WINDING, INSULATION, MAIN TANK, OIL
CONSERVATOR, TERMINAL AND BUSHING, RADIATOR AND
FAN, EXPOSION VENT, BEND PIPE, WHEEL VALVE, BUCHHOLZ
RELAY, BREATHER.
CORE
• The core provides a low reluctance path for electromagnetic flux and
supports the primary and secondary winding.
• Generally made of silicon steel.
WINDING
• It is the arrangement and configuration of the copper wire coils that
from the primary and secondary circuits of the transformer.
• Mainly of two types – Primary and Secondary.
INSULATION
• It is provided between
1. Core and the winding
2. Between the windings
3. Winding and main tank.
• Insulation is used to electrically isolate and
protect the windings, core and other components from each other.
MAIN TANK
• It protects the core and the windings from the external environment.
• Serves as a container for oil and support for all other transformer
accessories.
OIL CONSERVATOR
• The main function is to provide sufficient space for expansion of oil
inside the transformer.
TERMINAL AND BUSHING
• For incoming and outgoing cables terminals are present in transformer.
They are mounted on the bushing and is to the ends of the windings.
• Bushings are insulators that form a barrier between the terminals and
the tank.
RADIATOR AND FANS
• This are the cooling components of the transformer.
EXPLOSION VENT
• It is a emergency exit for oil inside a transformer.
BEND PIPE
• Generally used in small size transformer to replace the function of
explosion vent.
WHEEL VALVE
• Mainly used in draining out the transformer oil when it is to be
repaired.
• Fitted at the bottom of the transformer.
BUCHHOLZ RELAY
• Placed between the main tank and conservator tank.
• This device is used as a protective device for the transformer.
BREATHER
• It is a cylindrical container filled with silica gel, which is used to keep
the air enters the tank moisture and dart free.
WORKING PROCEDURE OF TRISHUL
• The TRISHUL TRADING CO. PVT. LTD. is mainly works on
manufacturing and repairing of transformers.
• The various working sections of them are listed below –
1. Administrative office.
2. HV Winding Section.
3. LV Winding Section.
4. Core Assembly Section
5. Welding and Accessories Section.
6. Painting Section.
7. Heat Chamber.
8. Testing Section.
TESTING OF TRANSFORMER
• It is done in the testing section of the company.
• Types of transformer testing-
1. Open circuit test:
• It is one of the methods used to determine the no load current (I 0) and losses of
transformer (CORE).
• Here the voltage at rated frequency is applied to the LV side and HV side is
kept open.
2. Short circuit test:
• It is done to determine the Copper loss of the Transformer.
• Here a low voltage is applied to the HV side of the transformer and the
LV side is short circuited.
3. High voltage test on Transformer:
• It is done to see that the transformers are not damaged due to transient
overvoltage of either lighting or power frequency.
• High voltage testing ensures that the safety is per design and standard, so it
tells whether the system can withstand the voltage rating that we supply.
4.DVDF Test:
• Stands for Double Voltage Double Frequency test.
• It is a stress test for insulation.
• This test is used for testing the strength of insulation between turns and
between other points of the transformer.
CONCLUSION
• Transformer play a important role in electrical system.
• During the internship period we have earned practical knowledge
about manufacturing, construction, testing etc. of transformer.
