Cauchy’s Mean Value Theorem is a fundamental result in calculus,
named after the French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy. It is
a special case of the more general Mean Value Theorem.
The statement of Cauchy’s Mean Value Theorem is as follows:
• Suppose f(x) and g(x) are continuous functions on a closed interval
[a, b]
• differentiable on the open interval (a, b).
• Also, assume that g’(x)0 for all x in (a, b).
Then, there exists at least one c in (a, b) such that

The Mean Value Theorem and its special case, Cauchy’s Mean
Value Theorem, are essential tools in calculus and are often
used to prove other theorems or to analyze the behavior of
functions. They are particularly useful in understanding the
relationships between a function and its derivative.

Let’s consider f(x) = x² and g(x) = x on the interval [1, 2].
1.Verify continuity and differentiability:
Both f(x) = and g(x) = x are continuous on [1, 2] because they are polynomials,
polynomials are continuous everywhere.
Both f(x) = and g(x) = x are differentiable on (1, 2) because they are polynomials,
and polynomials are differentiable everywhere.
2. Apply Cauchy’s Mean Value Theorem:
Calculate the derivatives:

g’(x) = 1

Evaluate the function values:
f(2) == 4
f(1) ==1
g(2) = 2
g(1) = 1
Now, find c such that:

• Simplify the equation
• 2c=3
Solve for c :
c=
So, in this example, c= satisfies the conditions of Cauchy’s Mean Value theorem
for the given functions on the interval [1, 2].
