What do we mean by

“Frontiers of science”?
 Leading Edge: The frontier of science represents the cutting-
edge of scientific knowledge and exploration

 Ongoing Discovery: It's where researchers are actively

working on unanswered questions and pushing the boundaries
of what is known

 Innovation Hub: New discoveries, technologies, and

breakthroughs often originate from this frontier

 Exploration of Unknown: Scientists explore uncharted

territory, making it an exciting and dynamic part of scientific
research
 What is Artificial
Intelligence ?

 What is
Machine
Learning?
 Artificial Intelligence is a software which writes itself

 Artificial Intelligence replicates human like

intelligence in machines

 It employs techniques like machine learning, NLP, and

computer vision for tasks

 Machine Learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence

that focuses on training algorithms to learn from data

 Machine Learning uses data driven technique to

improve tasks

Is Artificial
Intelligence and
Machine
Learning a
frontier of
science?
Benefits of Artificial Intelligence:

 Early Disease Detection

 Enhanced Scientific Research

 Language Translation

 Personalized Education

 Enhanced Accessibility

 Fraud Detection and Prevention

 Disaster Response and Relief

 Drug Discovery
Do we need to
be worried about
the growth of
AI?
Rules and
Regulations
Principles and Guidelines for Rules and Regulations on AI:
1. Transparency and Explainability
2. Fairness and Non-discrimination
3. Accountability
4. Data Privacy and Security
5. Ethical Use
6. Safety and Reliability
7. Human Oversight
8. International Standards
9. Accessibility
10.Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation
11.Education and Awareness
12.Collaboration
Rules and Regulations around the World
Rules and Regulations around the World

1) U.S. Approach

• AI legislation depends on agencies like Federal Trade Commission,

Department of Justice, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission

• These regulatory bodies recently unveiled a collective pledge to combat

discrimination and bias in automated systems. The FTC has been particularly
vocal about its authority to enforce federal law in the context of AI

• Section 5 of the FTC Act, which prohibits "unfair or deceptive acts or

practices in or affecting commerce," is a key mechanism in the FTC's AI
enforcement toolbox

• algorithm disgorgement is emerging as an especially potent enforcement

tool employed by the FTC to corral harmful AI systems

1) Canadian Approach

• Canada is in the midst of passing comprehensive AI legislation, known as

the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act

• Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry will be responsible for all

enforcement of the law that does not involve prosecutable offenses

• Where an AI system might result in harm or a biased output, the minister is

authorized to take action

Moreover, AIDA creates three new criminal offenses to directly address

intentional conduct which causes serious harm. These are:

 Knowingly possessing or using unlawfully obtained personal information to

design, develop, use or make available for use an AI

 Making an AI system available for use, knowing, or being reckless as to

whether, it is likely to cause serious harm or substantial damage to property,
where its use actually causes such harm or damage

 Making an AI system available for use with intent to defraud the public and
to cause substantial economic loss to an individual, where its use actually
causes that loss
