LAYOUT OF STEERING

SYSTEM
A typical steering system consists of,
• Steering wheel
• Steering shaft
• Steering gear box
• Pitman arm
• Drag link
• Steering knuckle arm
• Tie rod
• Track rod arm
Steering wheel:
Steering wheel is a type of steering control in vehicles that is used to
change the direction of the wheel axles with reference to the chassis,
So as to move the automobile in the desired path.
It is used in most modern land vehicles, including all mass-production
automobiles, buses, light and heavy trucks, as well as tractors.
Steering shaft And Steering gear box
• The steering shaft is the connection between the steering gear and
the steering column. It ensures that the steering behaviour remains
unaffected by the relative movements that occur between the driver's
cab and the chassis during driving.
• The steering gearbox contains the gears that transmit the driver's
steering inputs to the steering linkage that turns the wheels, and it
multiplies the driver's steering changes so that the front wheels move
more than the steering wheel.
PITMAN ARM
• A Pitman Arm is the first link of any steering system that connects the
Steering Gear Box to the Steering Wheel and Steering Linkages. One
sign of a bad Pitman Arm is play in the Steering Wheel. If not replaced
other Steering Components will begin to wear out.
FUNCTIONS
• A Pitman arm is a shaft that translates rotary or angular movement
into linear movement, or vice versa. Pitman arms are commonly
found in water pumping windmills, automotive steering systems, and
sewing machines.
TYPES OF PIT ARM
• Iron Pit-Man Arm Puller
• Stainless Steel (SS) Forged Auto Parts Drop Arm Turkey, For
Automobile Industry, Size: 5-10 inch
• Pitman Set Ta-1 chrome plated
• Crusher machine Pitman
• Pitman Arm Steering
• Mild Steel Idler Drop Arm
Drag link
• drag link. noun. a link for conveying motion between cranks on
parallel shafts that are slightly offset. It is used in cars to connect the
steering gear to the steering arm
Function of drag link
• Function: A drag link connects the pitman arm on the steering gear
with the steering arm on the spindle. Rotation of the steering gear
input shaft causes the pitman arm to rotate back and forth. As this
motion occurs, the drag link pushes or pulls the steering arm causing
the wheel to pivot on its king pin
Steering knuckle arm
• The steering knuckle is one of the components that make up the
automotive steering system. It contains wheel hubs (or spindles) and
attaches to the suspension and steering components of a vehicle to
transfer the movements of a steering wheel to the front wheels.
Functions
The steering knuckle is the end joint which provides directional
assistance as per the inputs of the steering wheel. The steering knuckle
is a part of the wheel hub which is finally bolted to the wheels. Hence,
the final directional changes are attained by the movement given to the
steering knuckle.
Types of steering arm
• There are three basic types of steering linkages used in passenger
vehicles and light trucks.
These include the
rack and pinion linkage,
parallel linkage, and
Haltenberg steering linkage. There are variations of these linkages, but
these are the three fundamental types.
