Introduction
• Nepal is rich in bird diversity & recorded over 850 species.
• 350 are indigenous bird, 45 seasonally migrate to Nepal, 300 or more are migratory
species.
• Most birds found in Koshi Tappu natural reserve, Chitwan, Bardia and wetland areas.
Geographical & Ecological diversity

• Nepal’s diverse geography ranges


from the Himalayans to the terai
planes.
• Varies ecosystems includes mountains,
forests wetlands.
• Each habitat support a unique bird
community.
Birds diversity

• Special diversity includes raptors,


waterfowl, passerines, and migratory
birds.
• Endemic & endangered species as
Bengal florican and the Himalayan
monal.
Distribution pattern

High altitude region


• Due to climate diversity and altitude
variation.
• High altitude regions species adapted
to cold, harsh environment.
• Species include Himalayan monal,
swamp francolin, Eurasian hoopoe
Mid-hill region

• Mid-hill region contains diverse forests,


river valleys
• Subtropical forests includes birds like red
headed trogon, gray throated babbler
• Temperate forest harbor species like spiny
babbler, chestnut headed bee eater and
yellow bellied fantail.
Terai region

• Lowland planes of terai contain dense forest, wetlands and agricultural fields
• Wetland area provide habitat for migratory waterfowls and shorebirds as Sarus crane,
grey headed fish eagle & black necked stork.
• Forested area are home for Bengal florican, Sarus crane, Great hornbill
• Urban & agricultural areas includes common species like sparrow, pegions, myna etc
Cultural & economic importance

• The Himalayan monal, the national


bird symbolizes beauty and resilience.
• Bird watching tourism contributes to
local economies and promote
conservation awareness.
• Kaji pheasant is a bird found in all
geographical region of Nepal.
