What is ART Appreciation?
Is the study and understanding of the
visual arts, including painting, sculpture,
architecture, and other forms of
expressions.

It involves learning about the elements

and principles of art, as well as the
historical and cultural context in which
works of art were created.
 Elements of Art: VISUAL

01 Line
Refers to a point moving to an
identifiable path. It has length
and direction. Ex.
Horizontal, Diagonal and
crooked lines, curved lines
03 Form
Three dimensions of
form: height, width, and
depth
02 Shape
Related to each other as they occupied
by the object of the art. Two
dimensions of shape: height and
width.
Two categories of shape: geometric
and organic.

04 Space
Sense of depth whether real or
simulated. Real space is three-
dimensional such as sculptures.
Two-dimensional such as drawing
or picture.

Two-dimensional artworks can be

positive and negative space and
three-dimensional space.

enhances the appeal of the
artwork. Its effect has range,
allowing viewer to make
responses based on memory,
emotion, and instinct.
Color Wheel has Cool Colors
and Warm Colors.
Color has three properties:
hue, value, and intensity
Hue of colors:
Primary colors:
red, yellow, blue
Secondary colors:
green, orange, violet
Tertiary colors:
04 achieved when primary and secondary
colors are mixed.

Value refers to the brightness or darkness of
color.
Used by artists to create the illusion of depth
and solidity.
Light colors – source of light in the

Dark colors – absence of light
Diminishing quantity of light: tint or shade

Identified as the strength of color,
whether it is vivid or muted.
Bright or warm colors – positive energy
Dull or cool colors – sedate/soothing,

Color harmonies: monochromatic
harmonies, complementary harmonies,
and analogous harmonies.
