the youth

BLOOD TRANSFUSION

• Transfer of blood taken from one person into the circulation of another to restore blood
volume.
• Is essential in the treatment of many illnesses
• Hemorrhage
• Anemia
• Major operation
• Leukemia
• Other bleeding disorders

Who can donate blood?
• Age
 16-17 y/o
 18-60 y/o
 61-65 y/o
• Body weight
 Minimum of 110 lbs (50kgs)
 Hemoglobin
 With blood pressure between:
 Systolic: 90-140 mmHg
 Diastolic: 60-100 mmHg
 With pulse rate between 60-100 beats/mins
Things to do between donations:
• Rest and sleep
• No alcohol and medicine intake for 24hours eat light meals
Steps in actual blood donation
Step 1: Donor Registration
Step 2: Blood typing & hemoglobin check
Step 3: Physical check up
Step 4: Blood Extraction
Post education counseling:
• Rest for about 10 more minutes
• Increase fluid intake (juice of water)
• Apply pressure on the purchased site
• Resume heavy activities the day after blood donation
What if?
• Tattoo, acupuncture procedure , surgery (may donate after 1year)
• Pregnancy and breast feeding (may defer blood donation for a while)
• Feeling unhealthy ( temporarily defer)

• STD’s like syphilis
• Hepatitis B
• Hepatitis C
• HIV
