MOTIVATIONAL

MANAGEMENT THEORY
1. MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY THEORY

• The most well-known theory of motivation which is based

on human need.
• Drawing primarily on his clinical experience, he classified
all human needs from the lower to higher-order in a
hierarchical way.
“Needs will become stronger the longer they
are denied”
Therefore, not everyone will move through the
hierarchy in a uni-directional way but may
move back and forth between the different
types of needs.
2. HERZBERG’S MOTIVATION HYGIENE
THEORY

• Also known as “Two-Factor Theory”

• Is psychological model that explains what motivates people
at work and what factors can cause dissatisfaction.
• It was developed by Frederick Herzberg in 1950s.
• According to Herzberg, “The motivators today are the
hygiene of tomorrow”, since the latter starts affecting
people’s action when they get them.

• Accordingly, “one’s grooming may be another’s

motivator”.
3. MCCLELLAND’S NEED THEORY

• Outlines the three desires that an individual could possibly

have.
• Each person is motivated by Power, Affiliation, or
Achievement.
• Each trait usually more dominant, but the other are present in
an individual as well.
