ESSENTIAL PARAMETERS
Technically feasible
Environmental friendly
PRESENT ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF FUELS:
Ethanol,
natural gases, hydrogen, etc.……….but most suitable alternative to
conventional fuels (mainly diesel) is.…BIODIESEL
BIODIESEL are produced from animal fat and vegetable oil which consist of
long chain alkyl (methyl, ethyl or propyl) esters.
These ester are referred to as biodiesel and they can be used in C.I. engine as a
sole fuel or by blending with petro diesel in various proportion.
TRANSESTERIFICATION
Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil or animal fat diesel fuel consisting of long
alkyl chain esters, and the process of this conversion is called
TRANSESTERIFICATION.
Reaction of vegetable oil with alcohol in presence of catalyst, to form Esters
and Glycerol.
Solution is kept for a day and after that when glycerol settled at the bottom
fuel and glycerol can be easily separated.
Further fuel is heated with acid to remove remaining impurities.
Different alcohol and Different catalyst combination are used for preparation
of different biodiesel and pure biodiesel is obtained by further heating.
Different blends are made by changing proportion of diesel and biofuel.
Some commonly used alcohol-methanol, ethanol.
Some commonly used catalyst—NaOH ,KOH.,Sulphuric Acid.
