YELLOW – TAILED MONKEY
This species of monkey is among the 25
most endangered primates in the world,
according to the International Society of
Primatology. In our country, it faces the
highest degree of threat which is critically
endangered. Hunting or capturing this
species is prohibited by forestry and
wildlife regulations.
Males have a large tuft of yellow hair on their crotch.

characteristics
 It is characterized by a patch of white hairs surrounding
the mouth and by the band of yellow hairs on the ventral
third of the tail.
Its tail is its fifth limb, near the end it is yellow.
Females have their first offspring at 7 years of
age, then every 3 years.

The yellow-tailed woolly monkey is the largest
endemic mammal in Peru. It lives mainly in
the territory of Amazonas and San
Martín, but it has also been found
crossing the borders with Loreto, La
Libertad and Huánuco.

vines, chontillas and other plants.
