Prepositions

Introduction
• A preposition is an essential part in the
English language and there are different
kinds of prepositions.
Introduction
• Without preposition, we cannot finish a
good piece of writing or make a
comprehensive and beautiful speech.
• It becomes very necessary to understand
the types and kinds of prepositions in
order to use them appropriately.
What is a preposition?
• A preposition is a word used to link
nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other
words within a sentence.
• Prepositions are usually short words,
and they are normally found before
nouns or pronouns.
• There are two very important rules to
remember when using prepositions:
Rule No. 1:

• Certain prepositions must be used to make

the relationships between words in a
sentence clear.
• Most prepositions are interchangeable, but
only to a certain extent.
Example:

• I ordered a sandwich with a drink. (being

together, or being involved)

• Mom made this soup with rice and barley.

(using)
Example:

• People with a lot of money are not always

happy. (having)

• He came to the front stage with fear and

uncertainty. (feeling)
Rule No. 2:

• Prepositions must be followed by nouns.

• Learning about prepositions and using them
correctly in sentences require a lot of
practice.
• Time prepositions are those
indicating time such as before,
after, during, and until.
• Place prepositions are those
indicating position such as around,
between, and against.
• Direction prepositions are those
indicative of direction such as
across, up, and down. Each type of
preposition is important.
