• Sharangadhara includes danta among Upadhatu.
• Sushruta indicates a total 32 teeth which are
classified as the Ruchakasthi type of Asthi Dhatu.
• Synonyms – Danta, Radana, Rada, Dashana,
Ruchaka, Dwija.
• Constitution- Danta is an organ of paternal descent &
exhibit a dominance of Prithvi Mahabhuta. • The human experiences the eruption of the entire set of denture twice in life. At birth, there is no evidence of dental tissue.
• The teeth erupt around the sixth month of the infancy
& the eruption of the entire dentations completes around 2 years of age, these teeth termed as an milk teeth, they usually fall off around 5-6 years of age.
• All set of teeth other than wisdom teeth appear around
the age of twelve, and the wisdom teeth appear sometimes after 21 years of age & this marks the eruption of complete set of denture. • The teeth are firmly embedded in the jaw bone with the formation of joint named as Ulukhala, which is variety of fixed joint.
• Half of the total area of teeth is covered by a muscular
part known as gums. Upper part is bright white ; covered with outermost covering i.e. Enamel.
• Pitta Prakriti – suffers from gingivitis, bleeding gums.
• Kapha Prakriti – strong teeth.
• Asthi Sara – strong & Big teeth.
• Shukra Sara – teeth very compact, smooth & white.
• Meda Sara – unctuous.
Functions • Chewing & mastication are the main functions. • To chew & physically break down the food material taken in the mouth is the main function of teeth; which helps in proper mastication & mixing of the bodhaka Kapha with the food. • Teeth helps in better appreciation of the Shadrasas. • The teeth are also important in pronunciation of certain words (Dantya Varna) • Teeth gives proper shape to mouth. • In old age the teeth are lost due to loose fitting denture, food is not properly chewed, many disorders of gastro – intestinal tract may occur.
