The Earth's outermost layer is called the lithosphere.


It is made up of the crust and upper mantle, and
extends about 60 miles into the Earth. The
lithosphere is divided into several separate and rigid
plates. Above it is the atmosphere, and below it is
the asthenosphere, another part of the upper mantle.
The word "lithosphere" comes from the Greek word
for rock, "lithos," combined with the word "sphere."
