INTRODUCTION

Access to safe drinking water continues to be a global concern and

thereby continues to receive attention. Safe drinking water is water

that has been treated and tested for harmful and potentially harmful

substances and has met or exceeded drinking water quality standards

or water with chemical and physicalcharacteristics that meet the

guidelines of national standards on drinking water quality.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

• The sachet water industry in Lapai faces multifaceted challenges

related to consumption patterns, distribution dynamics, quality
assurance, and regulatory oversight. Despite its widespread
availability and affordability, concerns persist regarding the safety,
accessibility, and sustainability of sachet water as a source of drinking
water in the region.
RESEARCH AIM

The aim of this research is to investigate the distribution and consumption

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
patterns of sachet water, with a focus on understanding the socio-economic,
public health, environmental, and regulatory dimensions shaping its usage.

• prevalence of use and to assess the quality of sachet

water in relation to health standards in Lapai community.
• Determination of the prevalence of use of
sachet water in the community
• To determine the perception of the safety of
sachet water
• To assess physical, chemical and
microbiological quality of sachet water
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

• What is the prevalence of microbial contamination in sachet water

and how does it vary across different production and distribution
channels?
• How do consumers perceive the quality, safety, and affordability of
sachet water compared to other sources of drinking water?
• What are the environmental impacts of sachet water packaging and
disposal, and how can these be mitigated through sustainable
practices?
• What are the implications of sachet water consumption on public
health outcomes, including the incidence of waterborne diseases?
STUDY AREA

Lapai is one of the local government areas of Niger State and hosts the
prestigious IBB University Lapai. It is accessible through Paiko-Lapai
road and Bida-Agaie Lambata road. The study area is characterised by
two seasons: wet and dry seasons. The area records its highest
temperature of about 350C during the dry season (November to March)
while during the rainy season (April to October), the temperature drops
to about 24C. The vegetation type is Guinea Savannah and the area is
mostly dominated by shrubs and grasses sandwiched by tall trees.
METHODOLOGY
Environmental Impact Assessment: Conducting field surveys
and data analysis to assess the environmental footprint of
sachet water packaging, transportation, and disposal in Lapai,
including plastic waste generation, littering, and pollution.
Surveys and Questionnaires: Conducting surveys and
administering questionnaires to households, retailers, and
distributors in Lapai to gather quantitative data on sachet water
consumption patterns, preferences, and perceptions.
Interviews and Focus Groups: Organizing semi-structured
interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders,
including consumers, producers, regulators, and community
leaders, to gain insights into their experiences, attitudes, and
perspectives on sachet water distribution and consumption.
