Schema
ultr.
Schema
-describes a pattern of thought or behavior that organizes
categories of information and the relationships among
them.

plural: schemata
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) –
credited as first to create a
cognitive development theory
which included schemas.
A schema is a pattern of learning,
linking perceptions, ideas and actions to
make sense of the world. Piaget
described it simply as the “way we see
the world”.
Schema Theory
-is a branch of cognitive science
concerned with how the brain
structures knowledge.

-A schema is an organized unit

of knowledge for a subject or
event. It is based on past
experience and is accessed to
guide current understanding or
action.
What can I do to make
students conscious of their
schemas?

1. Use advance organizers

2. Find a "synonym" with which students

are likely to be familiar.
Processes Involved in Schema Theory:

Activation Assimilation Accommodation

-relevant schemas are -fit new information -create new schemas
activated into our existing or modify old ones to
schemas accommodate it.
Generative Learning
Theory
Merlin C. Wittrock
-indicated that new knowledge
must be incorporated into the
already existing mental schema.

This schema may include

learner cognitions, pre-existing
knowledge, and personal
experience.
Generative Learning
Theory
-born from the mind of
educational psychologist
Merlin C. Wittrock,
emphasizes the active role
learners play in constructing
meaning and understanding.
Summary
Both theories stress the importance of
meaningful learning, where learners
actively connect new knowledge to
prior understanding rather than rote
memorization.
