LEARNING VERB AND

ADJECTIVE COLLOCATIONS

USING: TO, FOR, OF, IN, ON, AT, WITH


WHAT ARE COLLOCATIONS?

 These are pairs or groups of particular words;


verbs, adjectives, an nouns, WHICH require a
PREPOSITION; to, for, in, on, at, with, etc. in
order to understand them. Some can be used with
1 or more prepositions. We will break down each
collocation form and apply it into our learning.

She decided to stay at home.

She wanted the children to learn the piano.

FIRST STRUCTURE

Verb 1 [in its tense] + TO + verb 2


REMINDER!
Verbs can be used with any tense:
 I go to eat simple present
 I went to eat simple past
 I’m going to eat progressive
 I have gone to eat present perfect
 I’m going to go to eat idiomatic future
 I will go to eat simple future
 I will be going to eat future progressive
EXAMPLES WITH VERB 1 +TO+ VERB 2
1. I choose to learn English.
2. I chose to sleep more yesterday.
3. I’m choosing to fly to Dubai.
4. I have chosen to freeze the popsicles.
5. I’m going to choose to play Mario bros.
6. I will choose to swim with sharks.
7. I will be choosing to win the marathon.

 With verb 1, you can change the tense. However, you NEVER, EVER change the tense of verb
2. It’s always in INFINITIVE.
COLLOCATIONS WITH TO
SECOND STRUCTURE

 Verb 1 [in its tense ] + [TO] +


something/someone/somewhere

 Verb 1 [in its tense] + someone + TO + verb 2


EXAMPLES

 Verb 1 + something + verb:

I choose pizza to have for lunch lunch


I chose basketball to play
I’m choosing mangoes to eat.

Choose 6 verbs with TO to create sentences using:


- Verb 1 [in its tenses] + to + verb 2
Choose 6 verbs with TO, to create sentences using :
- Verb 1 [in its tenses]+ something + to + verb 2

where you need to use the verbs + to.

 Example:
Yesterday I decided to take my English class. I
always want to learn new things an I commit
to practicing everyday. I belong to a Facebook
community where we can talk and practice.

your job. Use some of the verb collocations
with TO, FOR, and OF to create 6 new rules.
