NATURAL WONDERS

Name: Rigoberto de Jesús Hernández Contreras

CONTEXT
• Chiapas is one of the states notable for
its cultural heritage, with a territory
that not only abounds in beautiful
towns of historical and traditional
attraction, but also in natural wonders
that are worth discovering. Among the
most iconic is the Sumidero Canyon, a
narrow, very deep canyon whose
history dates back millions of years,
and which is undoubtedly a must for
lovers of natural tourism in Mexico.
The Sumidero Canyon
• The Sumidero Canyon National Park is one of the
main tourist attractions in Chiapas (Mexico), with
great ecological wealth and one of the most
impressive canyons in the world. It was declared a
national park on December 8, 1980.

• It began to form 70 million years ago thanks to

the action of tectonic
Location
• It is distributed among the municipalities
of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapa de Corzo,
Soyaló, Osumacinta and San Fernando, in
the Mexican state of Chiapas. The area that
includes the canyon has an approximate
extension of 30 kilometers.
CLIMATE
• It has a temperate subhumid climate. It is hot most of
the year. Because in some areas the canyon reaches
high altitudes of up to 1,000 meters, there are some
terrestrial and aquatic microclimates, some of which
are fragile to the presence of man, potentially
breaking the ecological balance.
• Being one of the most important tourist attractions in
Chiapas – and in all of Mexico – there are various ways
to get to know the Sumidero Canyon. You can enjoy a
panoramic view from its viewpoint – 30 minutes
outside of Tuxtla Gutiérrez –, take a boat tour to
marvel at its waterfalls and rock formations, or take a
tour that delves into its historical heritage and
biodiversity.
