Introduction
• Author -Son of Amitai, From the town of Gath-Hepher, near Nazareth
that later came to be known as Galilee (2 Kings 14:25)
• Original Audience – People of Israel
• Date Written Approximately 985-760 BC
• Key Verse – 4:11

Settings
• Jonah preceded Amos
• Under Jeroboam II, Israel’s most powerful king (2 Kings 14:23-25)
• Assyria was Israel’s great enemy, they conquered Israel in 722 BC
• Nineveh’s repentance has been short lived because the city was
destroyed in 612 BC

• To show the extent of God’s grace, that the message of Salvation is for
all people

• Jonah forsakes his mission (1:1-2:10)-
• Jonah fulfills his mission (3:1-4:11)

• He was a reluctant prophet given a mission he found distasteful. He


chose to run away from God rather than obey him.

Theme
• God’s Sovereignty – God is always in control. Even though Jonah tried
to run away from God and His plan, by controlling the stormy seas and
the great fish. God displayed the absolute yet loving guidance.
• God’s message to all people – God has given Jonah a purpose – to preach
the great Assyrian City of Nineveh.
• Repentance – When the reluctant preacher went to Nineveh, there was a
great response. The people repented and turned to God. It is a great
rebuked to the people of Israel, who thought they were better people than
the Assyrian but had refused to respond to God’s message.
• God’s Compassion – God’s mercy and forgiveness was not for the
people of Israel’s alone.

Summary
• Jeroboam II (793-753 BC) was an evil king before the Lord but during
his reign, Israel’s stood among the nations, though in a political and not
in a spiritual sense.
• The increased prosperity resulted in a materialistic culture that thrived to
the poor and oppressed,
• Rather than direct Jonah to prophesy to his own people God
commissioned him to the Assyrian capital Nineveh.
• Unwilling to delivers God message, Jonah turned and aimed for the
farthest westward point known as Tarshish (Modern day Spain).

Summary
• After God turned him to the right direction, the prophet obediently
prophesied to the people of Nineveh while Ashurdan III (772-754 BC).
• Though Assyria had been in a politically weakened state, their cruelty to
the captives and ither undesirables was well known in Israel.

Why is Jonah Important?
• Jonah was one of only 4 writing prophets that Jesus mentioned during
his earthly ministry. (Isaiah, Daniel, Zechariah).
• Jesus noting Jonah’s experience as a foreshadowing of His own death
and resurrection. (Matthew 12:39-41)
• Jesus’s identification with the prophet at the lowest point of Jonah’s life
finds echoes in the book of Hebrews. (Hebrews 2:17)
• The blook of Jonah stands as an important link in the prophetic chain.
